You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Anybody on here doing/done it? We are up to the Lakes pretty much every weekend these days and have recently got into ticking off all the Wainwrights. It's a good excuse to go exploring in some stunning scenery and visit a few of the less obvious places up there. Plus it's given me a kick up the arse to improve my nav skills.
We're going to Keswick for the Mountain festival this weekend so I've got a couple of routes planned.
Sounds a great plan, you'll get to summit fells that you may otherwise not have. Win win.
I've got eight left and have had eight left for about five years! I did my first top fifty years ago so I'm not in a rush.
I grew up in the Lakes and by the time I moved away I'd done about 160 or so. I'd probably done most of the better walks/tops by then. TBH, some of the summits are pointless and just feel like book fillers - Hart Side above Glenridding and Hartsop above How above Patterdale are two that spring to mind being just pimples on a ridge.
Once you've done the main horseshoe type walks plus the obvious long ridges like the complete Helvellyn range from Clough Head to Dollywaggon then getting the remainder done means lots of short walks. I did four walks one day to pick up five tops.
I've biked to the top of a few which makes things a bit more interesting, the descents make things really easy on your knees. 🙂 Get away from the central Lakes and you are unlikely to meet many other walkers so good destinations for BH weekends.
I wondered if you might be a local with a username like that, whitestone. We're doing them as runs so it's good training for us and the dogs love it. We've got a long way to go as I'm only on 58...
I thought this was a rant about the fact that the Wainwright dog food bags aren't recyclable.
I'm not disapointed though, this sounds interesting!
This book gives you circular routes to do them all and some of the walks are really nice.
My daughter bagged her first Wainwright the other weekend, Rannerdale Knott's. Not bad for 20 months old!
Someone had got to the top of Helvellyn the other day with a baby in one of those front mounting baby rucksacks.
Some of the lower Wainwrights are the best ones. Rannerdale Knotts is a good place to start. Least that one is not as heaving as Catbells, and has a more stunning view.
Think I've ticked off about 35. And a whopping single Munro.
Loads of the ones I've not done are on my CBA list, so don't intend to bag the lot. Better to find an interesting walk/ride than go all out for stats.
@andytherocketeer - indeed. I wasn't implying that the lower fells were no good, the two Mell Fells are cracking little fells with great views because they are quite isolated.
Mungrisdale Common is another one that's hardly worth doing unless you pass it on a BG Round.
I think I've probably done quite a few but never realised.
A friend of mine is working his way through them, he's making a point of saving some good ones until the end.
I’m just back from a week in the Lakes, and was talking about this with a mate that lives in Keswick. He is working his way through them...
my question to him was - to complete them, do you have to do all ascents or just get to the summit?
what’s the consensus here? He thought getting to the summit ticked it off...but if Wainwright has detailed (for eg) 11 ascents up Blencathra - should we not aim for all of them?
Just the summits. Some fells I've done all the given ascents but others ... once was enough!
I'm a bit of a ticker and have got 20 Wainwright's left. I've also managed to collect the English/Welsh 2000' ers, the Munros and half the Alpine 4000 ers... A bit of a different kettle of fishies.
Had another bagging sesh yesterday. We were at Keswick for the Mountain Festival so drove to Braithewaite and did a route round Coledale from there. We did Crag Hill, Sail, Outerside and finished off with a lovely run off Barrow and back down the grassy slopes to Braithewaite. We'd parked at the Coledale Inn. I can recommend their food and their IPA is a decent pint. Perfect end to the trip.
@MrSparkle - The Coledale Round is a great walk and the Coledale Inn is a great pub. Can you post some some photos to cheer up a dull Monday?
I might put a week aside one year and give it a go ;0
@marcus - aye, a week should see you... https://www.grough.co.uk/magazine/2017/05/01/review-there-is-no-map-in-hell-by-steve-birkinshaw
🙂
ElShalimo - sorry, not got anywhere to host pics to link to these days. There’s some on my Strava though if you search for Mr Sparkle. That might work.
We went to the book launch and met Steve. An amazing feat but it buggered him up big style for a long time.
Check out my run on Strava.

I love the Lakes. I live in the Highlands but really like the more 'lived in' landscape of the Lakes, it means there's much more detail to look at in any view. I also like the fact that despite it being absolutely heaving it doesn't take much to get away from the crowds. On Saturday I set off at about 7.30 from Langdale and ran over the tops to Scafell. Between Langdale and Broad Crag I saw about 3 people and between Broad Crag and Scafell I saw about 3000!
Stever - I’ll be happy with under 10 days.
Well my best guess is 86 over the years, a lot by bike, it does help to live there at times
