So after 10 months of ZERO community transmission in Perth, we have been "locked down" until Friday 6pm as there was one hotel security guard who has caught the "stronger, UK variant" and now we are all (well, everyone not considered a front line worker) at home. Was meant to be the first week back at school for the kids but nope. Masks on everywhere (even in the office).

Interesting.

Must be tough after all this time. At least you seem to have systems and processes in place to deal with it. Hopefully a short term glitch for you over there.

After 10 months we have over 100,000 dead and realistically no chance of getting to zero transmission.

I genuinely envy a lock down over 1 positive test.

Around 1 in every 50 people I am likely to meet are positive here to put that into perspective. Kent, SE England...

"We incubate variants so you don't have to."

I don't wan to be someone who says "you can't be upset we have it worse" because that's not true.

You've had plans pulled form underneath your feet, life was stable and has suddenly become unsettled again. It sucks.

Fingers crossed for you that this will do the trick and you can go back to living the good life for us.

sorry you're caught up in it mate - you also seem to be on fire too, and maybe a cyclone? Bad times.

Fair play, lockdown early to give your contact tracers a week to do their jobs and (hopefully) throw a fence around this whole thing before it grows - nobody wants to be in Victoria's 3 month lockdown.

Watching the press conference - what's the rumour about the security guard then?

Hope I didn't sound completely negative after the post I made earlier.

It actually wasn't meant that way, more an "it could definitely be worse" type scenario really. In these times it might be a small consolation.

Here we are now facing community transmission of the SA variant that some of our papers are now telling us we are fighting to eradicate. That's just not going to happen. Yet another case of raising expectations just to be dashed.

It's ridiculous, the variant is out there, we can try to slow it but that's about it. All hopes are on the vaccines at this point and there is hope on that front. When if we did "eradicate it" it'll be carried by someone into the country later this year as borders begin to reopen. Just tell people the truth.

The fact that after a full year much of our media and government are still propagating the myth we will eradicate Covid or the variants of, is damagingly naive.

Stay safe down there guys.

As a Perth resident it's lovely to hear you guys in the UK actually have some sympathy for us. Thanks guys/gals.

It's only day 2 of 5 days of lockdown, so I don't think you'll find anyone complaining yet. There are some lessons to be learnt though. There was clearly a lapse in protocol that lead to this security guard catching the virus. He seems to 'remembering' small but useful bits of information on a daily basis. He was also moonlighting as an Uber driver, but 'apparently' didn't do any driving since he caught the virus. Time will tell if this was true or not.

Plenty of lessons to be learnt from Victoria's "2nd wave"...one was the government made noises about providing financial incentives for those working in hotels and aged care from holding second jobs but never really acted on it...here is hoping prompt hard and short works.....this is what a month of max 1hr exercise no further than 5km from home looks like (but it was winter and you could take your mask off if working hard so a bit different in Perth in summer believe masks all the time) wouldn't want to do again

meanwhile think ScoMo must have his own hot line to the Lord above if genuinely believes Pfizer vaccine is going to ship here from EU for end of Feb....thats what he told Federal Parliament today

Haven't CSL up in QLD got a license to manufacture the AZ vaccine? I would think thats what most of us will be getting.

Agreed - we here in Sydney made a fair few cock-ups for everyone to learn from, any cruise-ships due in??!? I think SA had a similar experience with the bloke working in the Pizza shop - they really do need to pay quarantine workers enough for that to be their only job

The Victorian lock down was fairly draconian, but I am glad Dan had the balls to implement it when I look at the state of UK. I know my old Mum is scared stiff to go out at the moment.

Pretty succinct description of why the UK is where it is.

Yes there's a big fire up the road too. 60 houses razed and over 7000 square hectares burnt so far. Deffo a big one. Very smokey down here and it's a NE wind at the moment but wind direction will shift as the evening draws in. Was still 30c at midnight.

Fortunately for us in Sydney it’s pissed-down all summer - can’t see much catching fire for a little while.

That fire looks nasty, embers and spot fires a long way ahead of it. Hope everyone out that way what out ok and that wind stops!
