Looking round for a new secondhand van and i've noticed a lot are for sale with Republic of Ireland reg plates. Are T5's a lot cheaper in Ireland and how easy is it to check a vans history with Irish plates on.
Thanks
I would imagine if you are talking Southern Ireland that you would be liable for some form of taxation upon it landing on theses shores and being ' first registered' with DVLA same as with any other import? I'm only guessing no knowledge, plus it's easier to do overseas scams......you're not going to travel over the sea to view and prod and poke said van!
If it was me shelling out my cash, I'd want to test drive, see documentation/service history and check all the VIN plates and stamped Ids first...but then I'm thoroughly untrusting!
Lots of discussion on the T5 Forum about T5s coming from Southers Ireland. There are concerns about the accuracy of mileage & whether they have been clocked & how well they have been serviced & looked after.
Do some googling on the subject......
One of the issues is supposed to be vans that have been written off in the UK being taken to Ireland and repaired then re-registered over there on Irish plates. When you check with HPI the write-off doesn't appear on the report.
That's the one I read about on T5 forum when I was looking for mine.
I think you may also have to get the van through an SVA test when it's imported which some people have had issues with.
As said above, take a look at the T5 forum as there's plenty of information there about it.
I looked at a car being advertised by a chap selling T5s. As a T5 owner we had a good natter. He said he sells a few high milers to Ireland and the buyer has no interest in mileage or history. That's because, in his opinion as a car dealer they're sold back to mainland UK having had new histories re-written.
Don't touch with a barge-pole.
And remember that there's plenty of scams going on in the UK with T5's for sale at the moment and it appears that plenty of idiots are falling for them.
Basically, you aren't gonna pick up a 2012 T5 with 20k on the clock in excellent condition for £5k. As with anything, if the price is too good to be true it's because it isn't true!
Seems that quite a few are falling for these scams and losing thousands of pounds to them.
As notmyrealname says if a T5 is going cheap even cheapish with kow mileage its probably a scam.
There is a very high chance the vans will be clocked, do yourself a favour and steer clear.
