Help me STW Forum, you're my only hope.
I've a 2018 Passat with Discover Media sat nav. Previously updating the maps has been a matter of staking the SD card out, putting it into a card reader, firing up DiscoverCare and letting it do it's stuff (on Mac).
Now get an error about 'check your internet settings' and nothing happens. Also tried on my dad's W10 laptop while I was up in in Scotland over the summer - got to 99% then failed due to checksum error.
I've tried downloading onto a freshly formatted SD (FAT-32) using Keka to decompress as recommended by VW but the car doesn't recognise the map database. Haven't asked the dealer as I suspect their answer will be to sell me a new SD card with the maps on and I'd rather not pay for something that should be free.
Anyone got any suggestions?
All I can add here is that the VW use of 7ZIP compression is a pain in the a*se. Especially when using OSX. Ditching the DiscoverCare app has also added a layer of complexity.
I was unable to get the last VW update to install despite trying to use an SD card and USB card and downloading/decompressing using both OSX and Win10 laptops.
As it happens, my wife has a Skoda - I had no issues installing the same update to her car (downloaded via the Skoda web portal). I took a punt and tried using the Skoda update on my Golf - it worked!
Golf now sold so not had to try again.
I've just read your post properly - DiscoverCare is dead. You won't be able to download updates using it, you need to download directly from the VW website:

Free? Free? Are you completely out of your mind? Since when did car manufacturers give anything away for free? A replacement SD Nav card - about £300. A replacement key, (modern remote locking type), about £250-350.
The majority of cars with onboard satnav have it built in with OTA updates, SD cards are too much of a PITA for them to deal with nowadays. Trying to get the infotainment system of my Ford to update is bloody frustrating, I have to leave the car with the motor running and ask it to update, but there’s no obvious sign that it’s doing anything, then the next time I turn it on it asks to be updated!
I never use the native satnav anyway, I always use TomTom on my phone with a subscription so I get regular updates, like a couple of days ago which was a major update with all new maps. Using the CarPlay TomTom app it all syncs up perfectly.
