Hi all,
I have a VW passat 1.9 TDI PD 130bhp saloon. Clutch has all but gone.Needs clutch kit and I'm also going to have the DM flywheel changed. I dont want a solid conversion as having googled those, and talked to a few mechanics, its 'potentially' more trouble than its worth so I have ruled that right out.
Been shopping around for DMF with Clutch kits, some Mechanics only fit the LUK cluth / DMF and some fit SACH. Not being a mechainic, I cant really establish if one is better than the other.
Anyone here advise me which one I should go for. I have found a menachins who has quoted the same price regardless of LUK or SACH, so which should I have fitted ?
Yes,I know.....whichever, its going to be the best part of £700 - £800.
Yipeeeeeeeeeeeee ?
Thanks
Why not fit a VAG clutch kit like it came with, which is rated to 300 Lbs/ft of torque.
When my clutch started slipping on my Ibiza (which was mapped to 175bhp)I was going to get the uprated Sachs clutch, in the end just put up with it for a while.
Personally unless you have mapped your car i'd stick with standard.
VAG have used both LUK and Sachs as standard fit, so frankly either would do. Specifying the 'genuine VW part' won't offer you anything more than a bigger bill.
It will almost certainly be the same part, made in the same factory, albeit without the VW badge on the box.
You could always ditch the DMF and fit a 228mm VR6/G60 clutch and flywheel.
Yup, not going VW as they quoted £450 for JUST the flywheel, no clutch.
So thats out.
As nickf SAYS,the stock item is either LUK or SACH's anyway as I understand it from the web.
Just wasnt sure if either was any better.
I tend to replace like with like. Until you get it apart you'll not know what was fitted at the factory. It will be marked Luk or Sachs, as I think these are the only ones fitted on the line.
As for the DMF there is a procedure for checking these, but if the vehicle has over a 100k on the clock I always replace them. I'm not a fan of the 'solid' conversions BTW.

As said above VAG have used both Sachs and LUK so the only difference buying from VAG will be the price and the colour of the box.
The different mechanics preferences will purely be down to what their supplier stocks and the warranty the give. I used to manage a motor factors and sold LUK clutches, they had a no quibble warranty if there was no labour claim involved so if a mechanic managed to muck a job up and over grease the spline or not torque a bolt up properly they could offer to replace the clutch to the customer and only be down their labour at cost.

I went to a vw dealer for a clutch for the golf
Got it home and it had luk stamped on it
Could have saved myself about 50 quid if I'd gone to euro car parts
