You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Clubber Jnr has been enjoying playing with my old Schumacher Cougar 2000 - trouble is that I don't think it's going to last long (crashing!) and since it's 20+ years old, I figure spares will be difficult to get hold of.
On top of that most of the places we use it are too grassy given that it's a fairly low racing car rather than designed for fun.
So, I've been thinking that a monster truck would be ideal - the only one I can really think of is a Tamiya Lunchbox but they're not cheap (when was RC stuff ever cheap...?). Can anyone suggest any alternatives - I have seen that modelsport and the like seem to have the equivalent of chinese carbon frames - eg kits that are much cheaper than Tamiya but are they any good and can you get spares for the inevitable breakages? I obviously have all the electronics so don't need any of that.
TIA 🙂
I had a lunch box box when i was younger , great truck but they tip over a lot ( a lot more than other monster trucks) get a monster beetle , have fun
You don't say how old Clubber Jnr is but I went from a Cougar to a Schumacher Storm which is a nitro powered, big wheeled buggy based on the Cougar chassis. The engine was very unreliable but the modern equivilent must exist, although I think most come pre-built these days.
Nitro is a little more hassle to deal with but you get way more play time and way more power, it was definitely worth it for me. You do need to be a bit more considerate where you use them due to the increased noise.

Electrics have way more power than nitro cars these days and nitro fuel is toxic as hell.
Hey nemesis why is he called clubber jnr? 🙂
if not a monster truck how about truggy like firestorm 10t brushless lipo model?
Ahem... Nemesis jnr is just about to turn 6. I don't want nitro for the reasons above.
Basically just after something he can play and have fun with without breaking or at least easy and cheap to fix.

Short course trucks are usually a pretty good bet.
I'm sure [s]clubber[/s] nemesis jnr will enjoy it or something similar.
Monster trucks can be a bit top heavy. These have a lower C of G so tend to be more stable. Also these are brushed motors which tend to be a bit slower than brushless so easier to cope with while he's learning.
Hmmm interesting. They look pretty much like buggies with slightly bigger tyres and a different body though - I would ideally like something with better ground clearance for running on grass.
Most tend to have better ground clearance than buggies but they are admittedly lower than monster trucks. Monsters seem to be a bit of a dying breed. Especially cheap ones. Do you have a local model shop? If you're using an online retailer you best bet is to contact them and ask what they recommend. Most (in my experience) are more than happy to advise and are unlikely to sell you shit because they want to get you hooked and therefore spend more money. I've always had really good dealings with wheelspin. Good range of kits and spares. They are in Cannock. Not had much dealings with modelsport but I hear good things. Apex in Berkshire used to be my local shop and they were great but I hear reports of them being not so hot these days. Others may say otherwise.
