Have a Desire S, thinking of a one x. Currently pay just over twenty quid for 300 minutes and 500M. Anyone wrangled a good deal from them lately?

After previous bad experience with Vodascum I would rather use two tin cans and a piece of string than give them money.

Cheers folks. Been with them over ten years now but it looks like the best deals are for new customers! A discounted orange panther 36 through phones4u is starting to look like a better option. You'd think companies would try a little harder to retain customers wouldn't you.

I got a Galaxy S3 with 2Gb/month (+2Gb through wifi hotspots), 900 mins & unlmited texts for £32 (with no upfront handset cost) instead of the £42 it's listed at (>8 years with voda, but was looking at move to 3...shame it turned out they have no network coverage where I live...)

In my experience you get the best deal once you cancel your contract. You then get called heaps by the retention team and then you have a bargaining tool. You have a month to think it over.

Mind you it's best to actually have an alternative to go to in case they dont come across like

Power to the people :)
And be sure to contribute to help others 🙂

My experience is that the first deal you are offered will be by someone with not much clout
You need to politely ask to leave and generate a PAC code to receive a call back from the hard core retentions dudes
Do your homework with the web to see whats out there and when they ask you what you want generally fib a bit and then see if they will match it

I wouldnt deal with a redemption scheme myself but this is what you can get so this is what Id ask redemptions to beat:

Bloody hell, wouldn't say no to a piece of that. Thought iPhone tariffs were controlled by apple with no flexibility.

Ended up getting same deal for both myself and other half. Played a little on the new Iphone 5 rumoured release date and that I could just leave and wait for that to come out. Ended up offering me what I thought was a good deal and made me think bu**er waitin for the new one and gettin tore a new one with £46pm tariffs just to say I had the latest gadget!
Bloke was canny enough and it was the kinda last call they give u just to query why you've decided to leave them etc.
I said the same to the guy Onzadog, thought u weren't gonna be able to budge on std tariffs etc. and he said "no, we'll sort you a good deal as you've been a loyal customer' patter. Wouldn't care neither of us big spenders on our tariffs either, just £20 odd quid a month for last couple of years.
I was happy 2 Iphones delivered next day.

Ben, been cheeky I know but any chance you'd be okay with letting me have your number so I can quote that deal back at Vodafone? Email in profile. Cheers.

Here's how it works guys - every customer is allocated a "value" automatically by whatever system the Telco uses. Generally it takes account of all the various factors which determine how much money u make them. When you come to renew, they will take this into account when looking at what to offer you to retain.

Occasionally you will get a call back after you've set a cancellation/had a Pac but don't count on it. Unfortunately for us, we're sometimes just not worth that "special" deal 🙁 Just a business remember - they may use the loyalty word al .over the place but there's a clear point where it's just not profitable to keep some customers.

Good luck on the deal. And if u want a really good one, don't bother with an Apple product; margins are just too tight.

Just in case anyone is in a similar position, we got:-
HTC one s at no cost
600 minutes
3000 texts
100 picture messages
1 Gb data
2 year contract
£20.50 per month.

Yes, customer retentions did call me back.

Not really - if you don't make them much money why bend over backwards.

If your a high user with a rubbish contract they love to tie you in.

It's so easy to port numbers it's not worth trying to fight over it.

Saying that I'm free of my contract, spend quite a bit and waiting to see what O2 will offer me to retain my contract on sep 12th.

Upgrade day for me tomorrow. Fancy an iPhone but I want to stick with O2 and they've never been crazy with their offers.

My Skodafone contract is up soon too.

I've typically taken their 'best' 18 month/~£20 deals and gone along with whatever handset seemed to do the job in each instance without any real quibling, I'm not a heavy minutes or text user and I've yet to exceed my current 500MB data limit, but can't help feeling Im getting shittier phones offered now, what I really fancy is a Galaxy S3 after playing with one the other day...

Based on what themilo posted above I can't imagine I'm of that much 'value' to them, a bit of a steady Eddy, stuck to the same netw9ork for ~10 years, I always take a cheaper contract and I very seldom go outside of the inclusive allowances on anything...

Am I worth retaining?

Interesting stuff. I've been with vodafone for a fair number of years; my current HTC Desire contract ended before summer but I haven't bothered putting any real effort into upgrading as the handset is still great! Having had a quick look around, I quite fancy the One X.

Apologies for the thread hijack.

I've found two O2 deals - one through O2, one through phones4u. If I go with Phones4U the phone is free, or it's £99 with O2.

If I get an O2 phone through Phones4U, is my contract with them, or with O2?

wallop, your contract is still with 02 even though you go through phones for you, well mine is.

i agree O2 have been crap with my upgrades hence going with phones4u

£15.50/month.

Gunz,

You'll be fine with 750 meg mate - that's a decent allowance these days!!

It seems insane that the 3rd parties can out do the telco direct deals sometimes. It just happens that they can use the frankly ridiculous commission they get for a new line/upgrade to offset the cost of the phone (which they get cheap by wholesaling or importing from elsewhere). the telco's hate it but people like CPW and P4U are such big players that they cant afford to drop them.

Oh and remember that even if you are a low earner for the telco the worst deal you should ever get should be any of the ones on their website.

hth

I'm eligible for an upgrade on Thursday, but my contract doesn't actually run out until November - should I wait til then to contact Vodafone, or contact them now?
I'd like a free HTC One X, 600 minutes, unlimited texts, and at least 600mB data, preferably for less than £30 over 24months, which doesn't seem to be beyond the realms of possibility.

Why wait then?

if anyone is unsure about mobiles.co.uk as linked above, I can say I have had no trouble at all getting all my cashback money from them. they ae part of carphone warehouse and the cheques come from them. All I've had to do is email off the right 5 statements at the right time....nearly forgot one month after an OTA android update somehow cleared my calaendar and wiped the reminders I'd set!

£18.42 HTC one X, 300 mins, 500 Meg or £22.50 Galaxy SIII same package on t mobile seem to be the best deals at the moment for my usage...I'm hoping it might drop a =nother pound or so by december when my current contract ends but it won't drop far I guess

oh and upgrade is eligible about 45 days before contract end generally, but wait for them to come to you, or start the process by ringing to generate a PAC code...know the deal you csan get and make them try to better it, 'else they won't offer much of a deal.

I am eligible for an upgrade with vodafone and about to go for a iphone 4S.

Is quoting some of the deals on here enough or would I need to provide evidence, i.e. the assocaited mobile numbers.

Also do I need to go through the hassle of terminating contracting, PAC code etc to ge the best deal?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Ask for a Pac and tell them you're leaving. Then cross your fingers that the retention team call you back. There's no guarantee they will though.

These are the people who can do the good deals.

I am eligible for an upgrade with vodafone and about to go for a iphone 4S.

Wait for week or so. They'll be better deals on the 4S once everyone is after the 5.

I rang Vodafone to upgrade but got so annoyed with their customer services I ended up leaving. Went into a 3 shop. Came out with a Galaxy 3S with 2000mins, 5000 texts and unlimited internet (with tethering allowed, the bloke suggested they will get funny over 1000gb per month). £31 a month for 24 months. I had to pay £29 up front for the phone. The phone is amazing.

Have you ever tried ringing the 3 mobile retention team?

My word, its like having knitting needles inserted into your ears.

They offer you a 'great deal', explaining everything then give you the price... the same as the website.

I say this and 'I'll look elsewhere unfortunately' - there follows 10mins of monologue where you cant a get a word in....Then you get a call from the special retention team...

hello..

Who then offers you the same deal as the website or a really pony old phone.

I imagine the phone would catch fire if you managed to download 1000gb in a month through it...

Glad you got sorted Onzadog, looks like you sorted a canny deal 😉
Just remember to stick a reminder in ur phone near your contract end date and repeat the process.
Word of advice re the Vodafone retention deals, some if not all appear to be discounted tariffs, therefore at the end of the contract term if you aint sorted a new deal then the monthly tariff will jump to standard rate as discount no longer being applied. They honoured my discounted rate past the contract term (good 6 month or so) after I had a winge, however complaining for the OH contract was a bit more hard work!

So.... O2 offered me a £99 iphone on the tariff I wanted. They couldn't budge on this so I got a free upgrade through Carphone Warehouse instead! Same contract, same tariff, same phone. Bosh!

Just rang up - had rubbish samsung monte phone at 15.50 per month. Managed to get a samsung galaxy s2 for nothing, 14.50 per month for 2 years for 600 mins, unlimited texts and 500MB internet for a new 2 year contract. Didn't even have to ask for PAC code, just said I'd seen a T-mobile deal on buymobilephones.net which he said he would see if he could match!
