Remember that BBC program about fitness and non-responders to VO2Max increase?

Well, now you can get the test done: XRPredict

So, who is going to get tested?
I was thinking about it, but I think I already know I am a medium responder, I will never be a top athlete, but I do improve a bit with exercise.

Hmm, interesting. Not too sure what to think about it at the mo, but might do some research tomorrow.

Why would you want to pay to have your VO2 max tested? It's basically torture!

I got paid to do it at uni for a project and that wasn't worth it!

If anyone is interesting in getting their actual vo2max measured, not this genetic potential stuff, my email is in my profile.

I think my VO2Max will probably be pretty average to low really. After seeing my power numbers, I definitely know I will not be moving up to any sort of racing.

VO2max is not the be all and end all of 'fitness', and not always the limiting factor of exercise performance. This is why we actually have races and stuff, rather than just settling everything with a VO2max-off.

The research is undoubtedly interesting, but flogging a test for £200 along with some training plans is just pap. There also needs to be great care taken with this sort of testing, muscle fibre typing in talent identification has cropped up before for example. There are obvious ethical implications of telling kids (or even adults) what sport they should do simply because they might have a slim genetic advantage. Even worse is telling them not to bother.

Went to do a test for a dissertation experiment but I might not be suitable due to the chance I might die... have to wait and see if my 20 year old ticker is still in order.

I had mine done when I was at uni. The numbers where quite surprising and they told me I had a max close to that of John Treacy the ex world XC champion. Given that I couldn't win my senior country XC champs indicates that a number of factors are at play in determining what you achieve.

Yes it also hurts like hell.

My local Uni Sports Science Department will do a full set of tests for £50, inc Vo2 Max, Lactate response etc....

Just to clarify (based on some of the replies...) this isn't a VO2Max test, it's DNA analysis to determine your ability to improve your VO2Max through training. But yeah for £200 you'd have to be pretty serious about racing (or be an Audi-driving, Orange-Five-riding, IT manager looking for another excuse to tell his mates when he gets dropped on a climb...)

I don't need someone with a clipboard to tell me how crap I am 🙂

In which case, I can't see why anyone would bother with it.....

My VO2max is stupidly high according to the tests that I've done and has increased as I've gotten older. My athletic ability has taken a nose dive and my biking ability never was very good, so VO2max is not a great marker of what I can do on a bike.

Old chap in our club had a blood problem and now has to have it tested regularly - he loves to tell everyone that his haematocrit levels is 48!
