So in a conversation in which i was asking for the new shan no5 bike the missus thought she would try and sweeten the deal of "no chance" by suggesting i get one of those fitbit things (because im fat)

so ive fancied a fenix 3 for ages but they are getting old now and are massive for my girly wrists. I like the look of the vivioactive 3 and s3 sport. Im wanting to use live tracking if possible (so i can cancel my strava premium) so im thinking the garmin is a better option? but the touch screen worries me.

The gear s3 or frontier is a no go because its not waterproof. the s3 sport looks like an option but im thinking the garmin will track better?

any thoughts?

quite like the vivoactive 3. Touch screen works well and there's a slider bit on the side you can scroll through screens with. I tend to leave the screen locked most of the time.

I've had a Vivoactive 3 since Christmas (had a Vivoactive HR before that). No issues with the touch screen for me - I lock it sometimes, but usually don't bother. I'm on Strava but haven't used the live tracking function so have no clue how well that works.

Overall I think it's a great device - excellent battery life (not quite as good as the Vivoactive HR but still get quite a few days - close to a week probably - between charges), decent looks, great range of functions etc. I find the smart-watch stuff with the phone useful as well because it covers the apps I use most (e.g. control of Spotify, Facebook, Whatsapp etc.).

If you don't want a touchscreen, look at something like the Garmin Forerunner 235.

Is live tracking not connected to strava and relies on a premium account?

How waterproof do you want it? S3 frontier is IP68, 30 mins in 1.5M of water, unless you intend actually swimming in it that should be more than enough!

For live tracking, probably easier just to use an app on your phone, no need to have a watch connected. There are a few free options, eg Glympse. Or you can do location sharing in the Google Maps app.

Probably better / more reliable than using the Garmin Connect app anyway.

The Vivoactive 3 is a fair bit more waterproof as it is designed for use while swimming. Quite effective in fact - I was impressed that mine doesn't just count lengths but can also figure out what stroke I've used.

BTW it might also be worth looking at the Vivoactive HR as well as it does pretty much everything the 3 does - it's just not as pretty. Also works on on smaller wrists - my wife and daughter both use one.

Mrs JAG has had a Garmin Vivoactive 3 'smart' watch since Black Friday (November'ish 2017)

She's very happy with it - she'd recommend it 😀

Live Tracking is apparently for others to follow you, so doesn't hook up to Strava like I thought it did.

Not flashy (got the black one) seems reasonable compared to phone (unlike the edge25 that was rubbish) hrm seems ok.

Happy man.

Interestingly my heart rate goes from 60 bpm to 100 when i come home from work!!!!!!

I picked up a Vivoactive3 following quite a lengthy thread on here looking for smar****ch recommendations.

Really happy with it, comfy and does what I need plus a whole bunch of stuff I don't. Battery life is good, charge time is fast, simple to use etc.

Only thing I regret is not getting the black version but I resented paying extra for it... might have to break out the Sharpie.

Did you get the gun mental @jamesfts ? I like the look of that one online but haven't seen it in the flesh.

On a slight tangent, I've purchased this leather watch strap (I got the light brown one) from Aliexpress for my S3 Frontier and it's as good as it looks.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/MAIKES-High-quality-watch-accessories-watchbands-22mm-24mm-26mm-brown-vintage-oil-wax-leather-watch-band/32827812068.html

They do black buckles and wide straps which is ideal for smart watches.  Less than a tenner delivered including pins and tool but the usual caveat of 3-6 week delivery times from China!

Straps are good point and something I'd not considered before buying a Garmin Vivosmart HR+. On mine the band that holds the strap in has broken. Replacement for the entire strap is £82 from Garmin, can't seem to buy just the small band. 3rd party straps are available but I dont trust them to not irritate or rub my wrists.
