I'm evidently a clutz when it comes to PCs.

We seem to have filled up the C drive of our laptop, but the E drive shows plenty of space.

Is the E drive just a separate part of the overall memory, or does it serve some other purpose I'm not yet familiar with...?

its just a partition, which you can remove though its easier in some cases to keep it separate and just use it as is.

Presumably, C:\ and E:\ are two halves are the same physical disk (not necessarily, but likely).

You can move your personal data from one to the other. You're the third person to ask on here in as many days, have a look back through the chat forum for instructions.

You can just cut and paste a few directories from your c:\ to the e:\ to even things out a bit. If it was me I'd keep the c:\ clear for systems stuff and installing programs and use e:\ to save your files on.

You should try and keep at least 10% of the c:\ free.

That's normally my refrain... 😉

OK, so I could just move all the data (mainly photos and music) from C to E, in order to free up the C and make the whole thing run better.

Right, time to get up to my elbows in geekery.

I personally would use the E: as a dedicated storage drive though some use it as an overspill

One thing,

The data folders are 'special' under Vista, and if you move them correctly then Windows will follow the new locations and everything will carry on working. If you don't, it won't. That's why I suggested reading back for instructions, I wasn't being an arse (well, any more than usual anyway).

Cougar - ah. I see. Well, I don't really (being a clutz an' all).

I feel like a small child having to ask something painfully obvious but with no idea where to begin*.

Help me through a worked example:

If I create a "OMITN - Pictures" folder in the E drive and then cut and paste all my photos from C to E will I

1. Free up C drive space; and
2. Have my holiday snaps show up for access in the E drive...?

*I can negotiate detailed provisions in multi-million pound agreements, work through the night unravelling horrendous corporate structures, but have no f---ing clue what I'm doing with my home PC. Doh.!

Not got Vista (Win 7) but if C and E are volumes on the same disk, you can shrink C and grow E, I think this is also true back in Vista.

That said, it's good practice to move your data off the system drive - search for 'how to move Documents vista' in Google, do the same for Music Pictures etc. and make sure you're doing it logged in as the user that actually has the bulk of it under their account. Following this will let you keep your nice shortcuts for future use and have the files go to the other volume.

Instructions here.

Your goal is correct (having pics etc on E:\), just your method is wrong.
