Less so in the highlands, and it’s always windy up there too…

I've seen midges in January and November.

They are not always biting, or indeed breeding, so massively vary in number and nuisance.

Don't let the wee bitey buggers dictate your holidays.

Scotland midge score - 10/10.

Iceland - 1/10 and of the 2 types one doesn't bite. If it's windy, and it will be windy, then 0/10. Pack smidge just in case but you might not use it.

I went in July. Can't say I noticed any midges.

I’ve not really noticed any midges when I’ve been there. But then I’ve never known it not to be a least slightly windy. There’s not much vegetation in a lot of places so that keeps them away.

We did 2 weeks in July with reasonable weather and only noticed midges on two occasions as there was almost always a breeze.

What are the must do/see things?
We're doing a week in July with car and house near Golden Circle (Fludir).

Nice place to stay.

When out airport way also have a mooch around geothermal stuff at Krysuvik.

Hot river bathe near Hveragerdi. You can also do guided MTB around there with a fab family run (mum, dad and son) firm Iceland Activities. Was just like being taken out by your local mates. We had very MTB capable young kids so they quickly adapted things so they could do more and Ulfar stayed out extra hours just to take them to his favourite childhood hot pool for egg boiling.

Jokulsarlon is worth the drive and maybe an overnight to include a glacier hike (will need to book any extra accommodation now as it is scarce).

Cheers for these. Hoping to do a day trip to Jokulsarlon, hadn't considered an overnight. Do want to try a glacier hike though.
Laugavegur trail looks amazing but too much else to do methinks.
