[Closed] Virgin Hub 3 in modem mode now I am not getting On Demand TV

On the back of the MESH thread, I bought a TP-Link Deco for the house which is all working really well. This meant setting my Virgin Hub 3 to modem mode however I am now unable to get On Demand / Catch-up channels through my Virgin TiVo box - normal TV and recording etc all works as normal (also randomly, the TV Guide says my local news is BBC London, however it actually plays my actual local news - Yorkshire). It isn't a particularly big deal as we don't use the features really, but I am a bit obsessive about having things working correctly - so does anyone know what I need to do?

If it helps, the TiVo box seems to almost permanently have the two green arrows flickering now which didn't happen before (at least I don't think they did).

Cheers

Obvious question is have you plugged the TiVo box into the new router or is it still plugged into the superhub?

^^^The answer to that is no LOL! Time to find a Cat5 cable and have a dig around....

EDIT: That is the correct answer – I had assumed that the Cat5 cable from the Hub to the TiVo box should still work but clearly setting it to modem mode means it has been completely bypassed.

The problem is that my PS4 is plugged into the new MESH system and it only has two ports - I guess I could go wifi with the PS4 though as I don't really play online much and I am getting 100mbps anyway?

Just buy a cheap switch

TP-Link TL-SG1005D, 5 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch, Ethernet Splitter, Hub, Desktop and Wall-Mounting, Plastic Case, Plug and Play, Energy-Saving https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ZOOJXEG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_6YVYRKHP2RP7RXFDC1ZP

IIRC when you switch it to modem mode it disables all bar one of the Ethernet ports. Rather than modem mode I have just disabled the Wi-Fi on the super hub and use my BT Whole Home mesh for Wi-Fi. The super hub handles the Ethernet addresses. Works great.

Do you have V6 box? If so, just connect it via WiFi.

I'd do what @ginkster suggests. You need to log on to the SH3 and turn off each WiFi band individually. Then you can continue to use all the Ethernet ports on the SH3. You'll need to turn off DHCP on the mesh system.

Yes, as Tallpaul says connect it via Wifi in virgin settings. Cant remember where it is, but very straight forward. I had to do this to mine not long ago. Actually didnt realise it had wifi.

Just looked. Help\Settings, Settings, Network

Aah! So that's how it works. I thought mine was just refusing to go into modem mode because I was configuring it via the ethernet cable. I was a bit annoyed a few weeks previously when it had a blip and changed its name back from the one I'd given it to the default VM**** and it won't change back.
If I don't stick it in modem mode will it have any effect on the speed my TP-Link router runs at?

I was quite pleased a few days ago when I had one of those calls that I usually ignore from Virgin. The offer to upgrade my line speed to 200Mbps and give me the full TV package (from our previous poverty spec) so I can watch the football on BT. The overall price was very little more than what we were paying. Unfortunately, I hadn't realised it meant I had to spend nearly 2 hours last night watching the Villa throw away their lead and end up losing.

They offered me that, plus a new Xperia 5 ii phone (we already have two mobile contracts with them). I said I didn't want the phone, could I just have the rest and they got really shirty and hung up on me.

I thought mine was just refusing to go into modem mode because I was configuring it via the ethernet cable.

Speaking from painful experience as documented on the earlier thread,

Putting the SH3 into modem mode disables all bar one of the Ethernet ports. Despite what the entire rest of the Internet outside of STW would have you believe, the activated port seems to be the first one which responds on boot. So if, like you, and me, you've got a laptop plugged into it for troubleshooting purposes, it's not going to work and there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

You have to have your primary mesh node / replacement router AND NOTHING ELSE plugged into the SH3 for it to work reliably.

Oh, wait, this is STW.

That's "nothing else" in the Ethernet ports. You will of course still need power and the WAN cable.
