To make it more authentic they did need more fat folk walking about and their uniforms are far too smart for real RN!
My moneys on the Morse Code as well.
But not sure what she will bang against the wall? None of these programs are realistic, when I was in the military Soldier Soldier was the go to TV series, and that was about as removed from Army life as you could possibly get.
In the latest episode did I catch the fact the the Rear Admiral chappy was telling the Captains of another 2 Trident subs to hop in their boats and go and find Vigil?
With Vigil at sea and providing the UK's nuclear deterrent aren't the other boats undergoing refits etc so it would take weeks / months / years to actually get them out to sea?
morse code an in joke for Evans
Brilliant!!!

I think we've had 5 pages illustrating that this is a fictional show and is not supposed to be realistic, it's just entertainment.
morse code an in joke for Evans
I will properly LOL if instead of using SOS she tries to send "Help" but only gets as far as the H....
But not sure what she will bang against the wall?
Her nose?

No it was a replacement missile sub and two destroyers (do we have two destroyers? I did a harbour tour of Portsmouth last year and we had more aircraft carriers than destroyers).
do we have two destroyers?
The RN have 6 Type 45 destroyers.
That gives them 2 on service, 2 refitting/maintenance and 2 training/working up.
Of course, if you’re looking for submarines you don’t do it with a Type 45.
No it was a replacement missile sub and two destroyers
You know on reflection I think hey said Audacious and Arsewipe or something else beginning with A, which according to wikipedia are fleet submarines (no ICBMs but plenty sharks with lazerbeems)
Her nose?
Banhammer for sure
The RN have 6 Type 45 destroyers.
Although currently they only have one actually available to deploy, see
Of course, if you’re looking for submarines you don’t do it with a Type 45.
BITD you did it with a Type 42! Some photos I took from the deck of HMS York during an ASW (anti-submarine warfare) exercise. A nimrod provided the rough location and a sea king dropped a sonar 'thingy majig' to find it. A Lynx then did the business with a torpedo, look closely and you can see it the splash.

Banhammer for sure
Did she take one of those into the tube? I didn't see it if she did.
Yeah
Morse code girl handed her a banhammer before she entered the silo room
Prob hid it up her nose, and will now use it to chisel her way out of the torpedo tube, like Andy Dufrane, kinda.
Whats the point in sending other subs to look for your own undetectable sub?
Gene Hackman would know what to do
Whats the point in sending other subs to look for your own undetectable sub?
I'm sure they'll run into a French sub or sandbank and get pointed in the right direction.
Anyone taking bets on how she'll escape from the torpedo tube? Gonna have to be something totally unbelievable given the water level so far 🤣🤣
Anyone taking bets on how she’ll escape from the torpedo tube?
The Bobby Ewing solution - it'll be a dream she wakes up from like the car sinking flashbacks.

The party line is there is normally one out on deployment, one recovering from deployment, one prepping for deployment and one in deep maintenance/refit - one of those in recovery/preparation should be ready to deploy at short notice - but that isn't always the case.
Of course, if you’re looking for submarines you don’t do it with a Type 45.
agreed - from our current fleet you'd use a T23, eventually being replaced by T26.
you know on reflection I think hey said Audacious and Arsewipe or something else beginning with A, which according to wikipedia are fleet submarines (no ICBMs but plenty sharks with lazerbeems)
The A-boats (Astute, Audacious, etc) are 'attack' subs, nuclear powered, not nuclear armed.
They are slowly replacing the Trafalgar class (T-boats)
I think the Navy have 4/7 so far - with Boat 5 on the way shortly.
Well that was crap.
I know there has been lots of love for it, but I thought it was utter tosh.
It was really bad - all those who could've been guilty were, of course, good guys. And the Russian patsy had a character as thin as. Almost like he was invented after episode 3.
Really it was just a filler for a lesbian love story.
~Can I have my 6 hours back?
Keeping Chekov's gun in mind, I thought the love story was just inconsequential fluff filler for the dual location police procedural farce? As for it being tosh, it was brain out Sunday night telly, what did you expect?
At least they finished it. Unlike LOD.
And the Russian patsy had a character as thin as
Yeah. I 'loved' the script
"But why would he want to work for the Russians?"
"Because he's a narcissist"
Oh, well, that explains it then, smashing.
^ good point, well made.
(bet they try and do a follow up - probably on a aircraft carrier)
Disappointed she didn’t pile into the cop shop gobbing “now you wouldn’t ****ing believe what just happened to me!!”
So this was really heterosexual woman realises love is just love after boyfriend dies and falls for a girl. Struggles with outdated view of family life, ditches girlfriend, goes on a u boat adventure, then gets back together with a better perspective on how humans human.
Seriously, she could have just gone on a really long hike to find herself. At least We'd have got scenery, not just distance shots of faslane!
Still. My empty Sunday night head thought it was ok.
My thoughts this morning are this might be one of the few times a US remake of a British TV series might end up being far better.
The wrapping up after the action on the sub had finished was so stilted and unimaginative. Overall it had lots of great ideas but I don't think it came together.
They can't use the "claustrophobic person on a sub" setting again, maybe next series could be someone with fear of clowns in a circus setting?
maybe next series could be someone with fear of clowns in a circus setting?
LOL!
(bet they try and do a follow up – probably on a aircraft carrier)
Wow..... just imagine how much space they'd have on one of those!!
Not sure why I kept watching - especially when it seemed the baddy seemed to know exactly how to sabotage a sub at any given time!
Ridiculous.

On TV, I think you'd find it would look exactly as big inside as a Vanguard class nuclear sub.
I think they'd have run out of plot if the saboteur couldn't sabotage things.

If you were going to go to the trouble of murdering people to get your recruited operative onto a nuclear missile sub on active duty, you're going to train them on how to disable it, especially as that was the point of their mission. For how much tosh the series was (and enjoyable with it), that's not really the complaint I'd be hanging my hat on
Why even try picking holes in the plot and realism, it's brain out Sunday night guff. I enjoyed it. Though as ex military I must admit even I baulked at the minging state of the berets on the booties who came to escort the prisoner off the sub! Absolute trivia in relation to all the other gaffs, but one that bugs me! Never in the history of BBC drama have they ever knowingly depicted anyone wearing a beret that wouldn't get a real squaddie/bootie mocked/jailed/dishonourably discharged! Fair enough if it's on a crab or matelot though 😉
Meh, loads to pick fault on, like a sub with over 100 crew always had the same 10 people on show, the sonar operator could just go sick when they're being hunted by Russian ships and subs and then be sabotaging systems within a minute of walking out without anyone ever seeing him do anything wrong.
Taking all that away though, it was a pretty standard fair, all rushed in the end, the loose ends being tied up made no sense either, just a lot of fudging.

More crew appearing would surely mean more fudging!

Holy shit! I'm just watching that now, the fella on the right needs a good slap for that. I've seen day 1 cadets with better berets than him!
Have any of you ever been hit in the face with a fire extinguisher? Perfect weapon - readily available, disable with blow, follow up with CO2 burns and finish the blinded attacker. Thought it could have been a little better than a simple whack.
Only watched 1.5 episodes. That was enough.
Watching this last night I said something along the lines of “I wonder what plot twist will be used to save her from drowning in the missile tube, and allow her to save the boat and catch the baddies?”
Wife said shhh you don’t know that’s what’s going to happen, she could still drown.
Yeah right. 😂
Have any of you ever been hit in the face with a fire extinguisher?
Yeah, another time I had to suppress eh "oh FFS" in order to avoid the Wrath Of MrsIHN. Baddie Fella gets smashed in the face with a fire extinguisher, and just sort of goes 'ow' and keeps on coming. Uh-huh...

Yes, I think the Americans could do a lot better with this.
After this and LoD I can't help feeling that Mercurio has lost the ability to script a conclusion. Anyone else remember the massive unexpected ending to Cardiac Arrest S3?
Outside of the missile tube the bangs were very clearly morse dot dot dot, dash dash dash, dot dot dot. Inside the tube, she just seemed to be doing random banging, even after realising she should try morse code.
I still don't understand how you can tap out a 'dash' with a maglite....
other than that I enjoyed it for what it was... a TV Drama on BBC for Sunday evenings
XO took one for the team like a caller said up there ^^^
Any why do these things have to be six episodes? Netflix took the brakes off telly having to be 30 or 60 minutes (minus ad breaks) in order to make an episode with a balanced start, middle and end**, but no one has to stick to six episodes. Do it properly or not at all - Pffffft.
** See Snowfall for fixed-schedule episodes with beginning, middle end.
Don't get me started on the bloody morse code bit. Firstly, why couldn't the same person that heard her tapping it out have heard her just banging and kicking in the first place?
And as she had a torch, why TF didn't she start hammering away with that straight away?
Think the best I can say is that it was better than another BBC costume drama

You listen for the gaps between taps.

Enjoyed it despite it being completely daft.
Yeah, I enjoyed it too in a brain off, post 10 mile run, Sunday evening state. I did rather want someone to break rank and kick 7 shades out of the baddie on his way to the conning tower though, just for proper retribution. Top marks if it'd been the Captain.
LOL at how many folk say they hated it but still managed to watch from beginning to end 🙂
It just left me with a sinking feeling.
It was fine did what it was meant to, a bit of entertainment.
That beret was awful though.
Also, and I don't know the answer, are there no RM on subs? Is it due to space? It'd have been handy after the captain's bring him back or kill him chat.

I assume no bootnecks on bombers as silently sailing round the Atlantic at 4kt isn't exactly playing to their skill set. Attack boats might be different as insertion of SF teams is something they do.

There are no Marines onboard the big boats.
However, they would have a weapons locker and a lot more crew to choose from than a couple of sonar operators.
Why would you send 3 unarmed crew members to deal with a murderous spy, when you could send a dozen sailors armed with SA80's?
LOL at how many folk say they hated it but still managed to watch from beginning to end 🙂
I only watched it because my wife had it on.
Is that a fact about powerful rifles housed on board submarines? Surely there's as much risk of them shooting something critical to the function of the boat as a sailor intent on mischief.
Actually, there was that incident in Portsmouth on a sub a few years ago, but I can't remember if the gun was already there or brought with the shooter.
the gun was already there or brought with the shooter.
He had just been on gangway duty with the rifle.
It would be pretty hard to get an assault rifle through the security at Portsmouth.
LOL at how many folk say they hated it but still managed to watch from beginning to end 🙂
I think it fell into the category that it was so bad, it was quite entertaining. I confess to watching it and it gave me quite a few good laughs.
Would you not just lower the propellant load? Given that ranges of engagement would be low?
"I only watched it because..." 🙂

Would you not just lower the propellant load? Given that ranges of engagement would be low?
Not that simple unfortunately. Modern military firearms either use a proportion of the propellant gas or the recoil impulse to function. In either case reducing the propellant would cause cycling malfunctions. You'd be on a hiding to nothing too, as reducing the kinetic energy of a bullet to point where it wouldn't damage equipment would mean it is wasn't very effective at neutralising a pyscho Russian spy, or similarly unlikely ne'r do wells!

Good point (see what I did there?). Perhaps the Radio Times should give nose information for the cast in dramas, so we can see if we are likely to enjoy them?
Pinocchio - ****ing shit. 1*
