Hi all,

Heading to Vietnam for 10 days next week with some friends. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on places to see that may not be on the regular tourist sites, or things to avoid that are?

Not after a 10 day itinerary, but maybe a great coffee shop or street food stall, or a popular museum that isn't worth visiting?

Looking for a bit of everything - culture, history, beach, hiking, good food etc etc

2 days in Ho Chi Minh City
1 day in Hue
2 days in Hoi An (or 1 day spent in-between Hue and Hoi An, Ba Na Hills resort?)
2 days Ha Long Bay cruise
2 days Hanoi

Thanks!
Duane.

I'm here now. 4th time out here.

2 days in Ho Chi Minh, definitely head to the Cu Chi tunnels and the War Museum.

Hoi An is great but the weather will probably be horrendous at the moment. We've stayed in the North this time as Central Vietnam is in the rainy season and Hoi An is prone to flooding. I've been there in rainy season before and got evacuated up North. Looks like there's some spicy weather just about to hit...

Hue, fine for a day. Imperial City is worth a look. Only been once, would only go back to go visit the DMZ

Ha Long Bay, lovely scenery. Very hit and miss with the tour operators. We swerved it this time (wife's first Vietnam trip) and went to Tam Coc instead. Its essentially Hà Long on land. Lovely river cruise in beautiful limestone scenery without being stuck on a cruise and having to go canoeing.

Hanoi, Old Quarter is my favourite place in the whole county. Crazy traffic, tiny streets, great food. The POW museum where John McCain was kept, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, another war museum, Train Street (which is officially closed...)

Weather is still nice and hot in the North, around 28-32 in Hanoi and Tam Coc. In Sapa now and its about 20ish.

Yer, Tam Coc is nice. Not sure the Easy Riders are still going in Da Lat, but good fun. Haven’t been for 15 years now, but recommend overnight trains instead of tourist buses. Local buses for local people are fun too. Just smile a lot and if crossing the road, just go for it but with no sudden movements - they will swerve round you 😆

I've not been for a number of years now. But I was warned not to drink the coffee past 2...it's super strong and will have you awake way past bed time.
Stayed in Hanoi for a few days on a work trip. The university there was an interesting place to walk around.
