I thought I'd better consult the hive mind and see if there's anything I should do , see or especially eat and drink in Vienna next week.

I'd like to visit a genuine old coffee house plus eat some decent local food like pork knuckle.

Thanks

Sacher torte!

You can also go and see Billroth’s gastrectomy specimens if you’re so minded, and Franz Ferdinand’s car.

We went there in 2019, so some stuff may have changed.  The schnitzels at Figlmüller at Wollzeile were really good , although they seem to have other restaurants too.  Stephansplatz is impressive.  Take in some classical music, there are loads of shows most days.Schönbrunn Palace was ok and had nice gardens.  The Prater ferris wheel was ok as well.

You can also do a day trip to Bratislava, as they're Europe's closest capital cities and have good train links.

Depends on how much you're into classical music and the Habsburg history though, but there seemed quite a lot to do.  We were only there a few days before going on to Prague.

Is the ‘Third Man’ ferris wheel still at the big amusement park? It’s been a while since I was there - 1986! 😲

Coffee and Apple strudel at Cafe Landtmann.

Not been myself but saw it on an old Rick Stein episode and it looked good.

The Ferris wheel is great, suspended at great height in a rickety old wooden shed.

Livingstone's to eat, got a great bar downstairs and I've not been with anyone who didn't like it. Don't think I've ever been to Vienna without a visit

They are still trading on The Third Man after 70 years. I think they do tours of the sewage system featured in the film or at least they did some punters died this year in flooding.

The Ferris wheel feels like it will collapse under it's own weight, it kind of squashes as carriages go over the top but it is a marvel.

There is a coffee museum if you are serious about your brewing, but it's mainly historic architecture. The old town buildings are interesting, and the city center has stately homes and parks you can visit for free (but check grounds opening times) save a bit of walking and hire scooters they are everywhere but need pre registered accounts.

The main surprise for me was how few places took credit cards we had to get cash out for tickets and even supermarkets. Last time I was in France I didn't get any euros out but we had to make 3 or 4 withdrawals to pay for stuff in Austria, this was just before covid lockdown.

Science and technology museum.  Loads of fascinating stuff, including a steam loco sawn in half down the middle, quite a bit of interactive stuff if you have kids with you

Still a bit old fasioned in some ways, many places don't take cards and just about everything closes on Sundays

@jca Not exactly, no. And if memory serves they've got his uniform complete with bloodstains on display too.

Wiener Schnitzel!

ok it’s a flattened chicken breast (traditionally veal) coated in breadcrumbs & fried, nothing special, but at least you can say you’ve had some

i had some goulash with a frankfurter in at one of the old coffee houses, it was delicious

Absolutely. The next word in the chorus is "Oh" ..."This means nothing to me Oh, Vienna"

Stephen Fry, "And you're?"

"Ure" A couple of lines from a Comic Relief sketch from 1986 (

)

It says more about my thought processes! 🙂

And I'll dance with you in Vienna

I'll be wearing a river's disguise

The hyacinth wild on my shoulder

My mouth on the dew of your thighs

And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook

With the photographs there, and the moss

And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty

My cheap violin and my cross

And you'll carry me down on your dancing

To the pools that you lift on your wrist

Oh my love, oh my love

Take this waltz, take this waltz

It's yours now, it's all that there is

I was there working back in the summer. Beautiful clean town with more eating places than you can shake a stick at. Def go up the tower for an amazing view of the city.  Get there by electric scooter - we went everywhere on these - cheap and fast 🙂

The river is massive - where we crossed it there was an island in the middle that was so big I didn't realise there was more river to cross.

Area around the Uni and football stadium is nice too.
