So I like to listen to BBC sounds whilst browsing here, except I can’t because the sodding video’s although on silent are stopping BBC sounds playing

Is it yet another attempt to stop new people coming to STW ?

Are you playing BBC Sounds through a browser window or a stand alone app?

Complaining about some aspect of STW functionality seems to be the main reason some people come here to post - so maybe you're actually being actively wooed 🙂

You can turn off the videos in 'preferences' via your 'my account' link (top right of thr page).

Of course Next time someone drops a coffee on the server (seems to be about once every couple of weeks) that preference will get reset and you'll need to go back and redo it. But that's the fix for the problem you're having...

Most web browsers have a setting to disable auto-playing audio or video, either for all sites or per-site.

Thats a conflict between the two apps really. STW can't really account for anything happening outside the browser. Most video or sound based apps would typically pause if you visit any website which itself has sound or video. Ands it seems sensible generally to yield priority to the app you are actually looking at over one playing in the background.

Theres nothing in Sounds that would allow you to give it priority. Safari doesnt have a setting in that respect either - you could try other browsers maybe.

Or.. you know the rest.

Unlikely to make a difference on iOS.

I think you're on the money though. A video will be inherently a video+audio format even if there's no sound. There's no way for one app to 'hear' another (unless explicitly designed to I suppose), and it would raise some pretty serious privacy and security concerns if it could.

Complete shot in the dark but,

What happens if you use Sounds in a web tab rather the app? It's plausible that Safari may allow two streams to play simultaneously within itself, it's then controlling output at an app level rather than iOS managing the whole system.

I've no idea whether it'll work or not but it can't hurt to try.

Happening for the first time here this morning. On an iPad (not Drac's). Sounds App silenced/paused by a video popup when browsing the forum. Wasn't happening earlier in the week.

I get the thing about prioritising sound from the source you are on, but the videos are on silent so why would they therefore take priority.

I've now managed to set browsing settings on my PC to stop the Vids from auto playing, but I cant appear to get the same to happen on an iphone.

It's both a fair assumption that a video would have sound - your phone's OS isn't going to watch the film for you and make a decision - so a blanket assumption has to do. Its also a fair assumption that the app you have open and are scrolling though and looking at would take priority over one running in the background.

Because silent videos still have an audio channel.

Yup, that's what I thought was happening. When Safari is made the foreground app, background apps get deprioritised.

Stops Spotify playing on my phone despite videos being turned off. I just put it down to the fact that this whole site is like one of those fanzines printed in a teenagers bedroom in the 1970's it's utterly amateurish but in a strange way that's half the appeal 😊

There's an option in the Accessibility settings in iOS and iPadOS to stop auto-play of video previews. I've no idea if it does the job here yet with the popups... but I'm trying it on the iPad.

Also... tried using the phone last night... also get the thing were a video popup prevents you scrolling back up the page... so you can't read anything, or get to the mobile menu hamburger.

Why are you getting vids if you’re a full number Kelvin?

I only seem to have them appear if I come into the site ‘backwards’ so to speak. Navigate to the site - no vids - leave and click ‘back’ they might appear but the don’t seem to cause any grief - typing on iPhone
