Basically, I'm looking to make kind of creative/abstract music videos, compiled from random photos and short vids taken on my iPhone. I'll be using my Windows PC, so looking for something as simple as possible just to get me going. I do have whatsitcalled installed, the Adobe one that lots of people use, Premiere? But the leaning curve looks steep so thought I'd dip into that later once I'm learning the ropes. Or maybe it's best to just jump right in? I know my way around PS/Illustrator/ID etc already.

I suppose the important features would be the ability to tie it all in and sync to a music track. No watermark (although happy to pay to get rid if I like it), and simplicity of use. Maybe some nice transitioning FX/Presets to crack on with.

Thanks1

I've never used it but, counterintuitively, you can do basic video editing with W10's built-in Photos app I believe.

The next step up, maybe VLC?

Huh? Sounds simple, like me. I'm still on 8.1 cos lazy. I do use VLC tho, never knew it could do such things.

Well, I think it can?

Windows 8.1 is like three years past end of life. Get it upgraded.

Premiere is pretty intuitive, I'd jump in with that.

It's pricy though. Davinci resolve is very powerful, particularly for colour grading, and is free. I've also had fewer issues with crashes when processing high-res videos with Davinci than with Premier (Elements).

I use Windows Movie Maker for my amazing high budget productions

Windows Movie Maker

I used to love that. Then it just disappeared 🙁

Are you using Windows XP?

OpenShot was a recommendation I got from here a while back. Not used it much, but it's pretty good: fairly intuitive, simple, but powerful enough that it does all the things I needed.

Just use the w10 one built in. Just type video into the task bar.

I'm currently using Shotcut. Reasonably intuitive and lots of instructional videos available.
i don't do anything too fancy with it but it's a bit like my bikes.... lots more capable than I am.

MS Windows Home edition seems to have Movie Maker, or at least mine does

Davinci resolve or lightworks.  Put aside some time to learn how they work and you will have a much better experience

I used a free copy of Lightwork until the free period expired. I liked it and was relatively easy to pick up

OK now for something completely different.

I used this software to make some short clips which I sometimes then edited up with other stuff as well.

just go wild on "live edits" with a bunch of source material and chop out the bits that are interesting, stuff used to happen that you would probably never do on a regular NLE and it happens in real time so no hours n hours of messing about.... well maybe...

short version, map files, fx and transitions to a keyboard and mouse or x box controller/ whatever input device and randomly do stuff, see what happens.

I use to use Openshot but moved over to Olive some time ago, just prefer the way things work in Olive. It's free/opensource multiplatform - https://www.olivevideoeditor.org/

Another vote for Davinci Resolve - it’s got a ton of features, but you don’t need to use them, or learn to use them, in order to work through the basics. There are loads of good tutorials on YouTube to get you started.

Worth taking a look at Lightworks which is pretty feature rich. You can only render 720p HD with the free version, but great for getting the hang of things and seeing if you need to spend on something

Thanks for that. Is that link correct though?
