What windows 10 software do you use to edit go pro clips into shorter and/ also to convert to a compressed codec so the they take up less space?
Also do you are there any sites to upload them (thinking to enable personal viewing rather than getting any followers!)?
Ideally free / low cost as it's a hobby of my son that may not have much longevity!
I just use Moviemaker which must be a free MS program that ships with Windows as I have never installed it
There's a free version of Davinci resolve that is good but maybe a little steep learning curve.
It's the base of a paid pro edition package and its free form is still pretty good.
I can only talk from an industry point of view really.
GoPro stuff is already pretty compressed.
Movie Maker no longer part of Windows? Replaced by Clipchamp which will do everything you need and has an online browser-based version too so no need to install anything.
I use Shotcut. Free and cross-platform. Does more than you probably need though.
Just upload to YouTube and set them to private for storage/backup.
Be wary of compressing too much though - will obviously affect playback quality and storage is relatively cheap these days. I don't usually go below 2.7k any more (I do usually drop framerate to 25 though, but that's an aesthetic decision and nothing to do with storage).
I use Shotcut. Free and cross-platform.
Yes, Shotcut for me as well. I find it very good and once over the initial phase fairly easy to use.
I thought there was an installed one but couldn't seem to find it / remember it's name! Doesn't look like it is anymore though.
I'll give shotcut a go.
thanks all.
some how rather than installing shotcut I ended up getting duped into an install of fast! that must have been an ad or pop up on the page. Feeling a bit stoopid now and worrying about what malware I've just acquited, I had just assumed that was the name of the application. facepalm.
Movie Maker
(You need to get Windows Essentials 12)

Openshot is worth a look.
Vimeo maybe for upload - you can set private / password only viewing . There’s free and paid for versions but the free version only limits how much you can upload in one day
+1 for davinici resolve, its pretty full on but theres a world of youtube tutorials to teach you which of the very many buttons you want to press. But its free, and all you'll ever need.
Davinci is awesome, especially if you need to manage colour.
If you’re just messing around and the learning curve for Davinci is too steep you can try something like https://www.veed.io/
