What is going on?

The world is being overrun by people attaching the tired and lame cliche of "victim blaming" to normal common sense. We've had it here on many recent threads and now Sir Philip Hampton states the bleeding obvious over causes of the gender pay gap (while trying to do something constructive about it) and all hell breaks loose

"Resign"
"astonishingly Ill-judged"
"Heap insult on injustice" etc

FFS, what has happened to the modern generation that they can't face up to facts and personal responsibility. Crazy.....

According to the BBC news site, he's said that the female BBC presenters would have been paid more if they'd asked for more.

I don't have the full report to read, but if the evidence is that the female presenters didn't negotiate as hard as their male colleagues, he may have a point.

Or he could be making sweeping generalisations.

Oi Really 🙄

Since when has "ask for more" = get more ?

The Public sector have been asking for more for years, hasn't seemed to have made unos iota of a difference to them has it.

It'd be amusing if there was a study debunking his point. That'd make the OP look a bit of a **** (no gender bias should be inferred by this choice of insult).

Yer butt.

Sir Philip Hampton joined RBS in 09' as Chairman, so he helped steer RBS down the shitpipe of financial hell hole.

Who is even listening to the moron?

Increasingly used incorrectly to defend someones opinion (rather than the victim him/herself). It's a phrase mostly used by halfwits, which dilutes it's effectiveness when used correctly.

In most industries it doesn't. In an industry where people are paid on their perceived talent and popularity with agents working to help negotiate wages it's a fair possibility.

What is going on?

Every thick-arse has been given a platform to be outraged; existing media have now been given free content to report on thick-arses being outraged. Everyone else gets outraged at media reporting outrage of thick-arse.

Essentially, it's thoughtless point-scoring by the 'pub bore', but by the nature of its design gathers collusion and momentum. It's utterly bonkers and one day will be laughed about.

This place is no different on occasion, and I don't mean the forum 🙂

The damage had already long been done by the time he arrived at RBS

I'm fully aware of RBS's situation thank you.

He still steered it down a shitpipe of a financial hellhole.

Unless you can prove otherwise, obvz is after all obvz.

I have no need to prove anything, and I can't be arsed.
Anyone who gives a shit can get googling.

It's not their fault that they're halfwits though. They are victims of circumstance, be it genetic or socioeconomic. What you're doing there is finding fault with the sufferer

Sounds familiar. See recent posts on life-changing threads on brexit. Or dogs. By both sides of the "arguments".

Well.... victim blaming is definitely a thing. It's origin is in blaming women for their own rape, I believe.

I think it's just getting used more because people are wise to it being used as a tactic by those wanting to deflect the blame/attention.

You could legitimately call this "victim blaming" I suppose. Not sure that's the biggest problem here:

But I think the outrage is because he's actually the vice-chair of a governmental committee set up to promote gender equality in the workplace, particularly at the senior level.... plus what he's saying is a) factually incorrect (evidence), and b) indicative of somebody in denial of the very thing he's supposed to be addressing.

Whats really getting boring is people dismissing legitimate concerns, simply because they haven't bothered to try to understand them.

Political correctness and identity politics. BBC focusing on what's "Trending" on Twitter, ie a 1000 shares amongst a user base of a billion ?
