Don't back down now - that's not the STW way.

Nice arches - I guess this thread is exactly what it says on the tin, when I was expecting something different.

This is up the valley from me, Hewenden Viaduct, Cullingworth, West Yorks.
Was unused and fenced off when I was a kid. Now part of a cycle path.

There's here, just up the road from where I was raised.

[img] [/img]

There's an annual beer festival right next door to it and piddling over the edge is still a rite of passage.

It's not as scenic as the ones above but this is local to me:

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

Stockport Viaduct, the largest brick built viaduct in Europe, 27 arches. When it was built it was the biggest one in the world. But it's not as scenic as my favourite one of Glenfinnan (the one used in one of the Harry Potter films):

Landore Viaduct, Swansea.

Not at all scenic, but designed by Brunel (at least part of it was) and the hill in the background has superb MTB tracks.

This is the Armsgrove Viaduct which passes above the Wayoh Reaservoir in Bolton. The viaduct carries the Bolton to Blackburn Railway and was constructed in 1847 / 1848.

[img] [/img]

This one is nowhere near me, in fact its in France, but it is Roman and mighty impressive...

sharkbait: there's a layout very similar to that near me at Marple.

[img] [/img]

Crosses the River Goyt. The aqueduct is actually far nicer looking than the viaduct which came much later (aqueduct is 1800).

Well I Was going to post the Stockport beast but I was beaten to it.

Then I was going to post the Goyt valley dual-track combo but I was beaten to it.

So I'll post a picture of the one phyically closest to me now:

a few weeks back I caught the train out of Melbourne then rode south to the coast taking in the Camperdown - Timboon Railtrail

I suspect some guy from local tourist office had job of putting that old trolley cart there and probably didn't make the 10km or so back to the nearest dirt road

a fully restored trestle bridge near Timboon, Vic
Have to add that just up the road from where live commuter trains cross something similar (and I'd be crossing myself if I did the journey every day)

I also drive under it a fair few times a week and occasionally go on the train above but luckily the misery(Northern) line is not my local line anymore I've moved up to the Piccalilli (Piccadilly )line far more sensible

Is it Pontrhydyfen viaduct? 😀 Sorry Johndoh, I don't know where that is?

Oh by the way, Pontrhydyfen Viaduct, just down the road from Afan:

Can't post a pic as I'm on my phone, but Sankey viaduct near Earlstown.

Probably the first railway viaduct in the country and I'm (my employers) are in the process of bring sodding great steel structures to it in order to electrify the line

Copley Viaduct is great but the real gem is the cricket pitch sandwiched between the viaduct, the river and the other railway line. Your photo captures the new pavilion building too. A Great place to drink beer whilst watching others run around like madmen

This is my turning point for a 10km run, its exactly 3.1 miles from my house. 😀

Its had modern brickwork done to strengthen it unfortunately, and it looks crap over the road, but the rest of the viaduct is stunning.
It cuts a line between Edinburgh and West lothian.

DavidTaylforth, that's Ulverston/Plumpton innit? We used to jump off that as kids, how we survived childhood I'll never know.

Here's a little one, near San Sebastian. Probably rideable if you're not scared of heights like I am, although I have ended up riding onto it when not concentrating on the trail.

[img] [/img]

And this one, you ride on top of or beside the pipe for about 10km, hardly descending but utterly engaging with some quite nasty exposure.

Random fact from an old railway book, when they where building Stokport Viaduct, they where using horses and carts, horses dont like going backwards, and one reversed its load to fill in the viaduct piers, and went a bit to far, cart and horse fell down inside viaduct pier, and theyre still there today, no way and waste of money to get them out.

Some fantastic victorian engineering around.

Yes JP, I took the photo from a field half way nown the Nab one snowy winter's day when we went toboganning. What I would love to get is the steam train crossing the viaduct in snow, though I think it might be an impossible shot because it always comes at dusk.
