Just got charged £130 for our cat to have a quick blood test. I, m not naive and know they're not cheap but with possible large bills ahead how do you know whether the charges are excessive? I currently have no income so not too flush Any advice apart from ringing around would be much appreciated as I can't afford to pay more than necessary. Thanks in advance
Maybe try the PDSA?
Not sure. I've paid similar for stuff before. If there's something up, can you claim on insurance including adding in the initial testing?
When mine got run over, I think everything including the initial works at the local vets was covered.
Don't know where you are but we recently had a broad spectrum blood test for one of our dogs, got the results in about 15 minutes. Cost about 80 quid.
That was a semi-rural vets in Cheshire. My sis has worked for a vets in North Birmingham for years and they're significantly more expensive than ours, even with the 'F&F discount' I would get.
probably not eligible for pdsa . I have no insurance. I'm also annoyed as the vet promised to call me back last night with the results and have heard nothing despite ringing in first thing. Told he'll call later.
Recently paid £73 for a consultation, pain killers + flea / worming tablets (3 month single dose ones).
Then paid another £31 for a follow-up consultation + more pain killers a week later.
It sounds to me like the OP paid over the odds.
We paid about £130 for a blood test a few weeks ago and then a further £60 for a urine sample.
Turned out to be kidney failure and he's now on a special, read expensive, diet.
Croydon/South London if it makes any difference.
I'm sure you've looked into it phil but presume this special diet can be sourced online considerably cheaper or and possibly with a bit of know how you could make something up suitable yourself?
You're average animal blood test type charge does seem to be around £60 to £80 these days. We had a bulk blood test done for all the horses in the stable yard recently. The supposed discount price was £57.
Add in the consultation charge for the admin and time (£40/hr ???), and you're not really far off that bill you have.
That being said, cats and dog vet bills seem bloody expensive for their relative animal size to horses ... which are often on a par price wise ( if not cheaper sometimes )
Early days at the moment. Thankfully it's not prescription and yes, it's cheaper online. Once we've discovered which ones he'll eat we can buy in bulk. Should work out roughly twice that of his previous food so not the end of the world.
Not looked at making our own could be worth a try. I'm more concerned with what he eats when out and about and what the rest of the street feed him.
Our dog had a blood test a few weeks ago. As far as I remember it was around £60-£70 for consultation and test with the vet calling with the result later that day. Certainly nowhere near £140.
Are some blood tests more expensive?

Are some blood tests more expensive?
I would imagine so. I guess it depends on what you are testing for and the complexity of doing that. Surely some tests are more complex than others.
