....what name for my new kitten?

It's pure black and I don't know the sex of it yet.

Before anyone suggests it, not sooty.

well Paul's a boys name, so you have a 50:50 chance of getting that wrong...
How about "Hilary" then?

Doesn;t really work for cats though as unlike dogs they don't often come to heel when you shout thier name 😉

**** - once very popular for black pets. I don't know why it has gone so out of fashion.

For my sins I help moderate a number of cat-photo based websites (don't ask). We get names submitted with the pictures, and you'd be surprised how many cats are named after well known black celebrities of a certain generation. Tons of Louis Armstrongs, Sammy Davis Jrs, Nina Simones, Ray Charleses, Mr Bojangleses, Ella Fitzgeralds, that sort of thing. You don't seem to get as many Frank Sinatras, say. Took a while to notice it but it's definitely a trend. I have no idea if it's deliberate or a sort of sub-concious crypto-racist thing. Weird.

Most popular kitten name last time I looked: Chloe. No idea why.

cats and dogs should have typically human names in my opinion, names such as 'Mark', 'Dave' and 'Binners'. if you're going to call it some fluffy name like then might as well go for 'MR Wuffles you wuffy little wuff wuff'

Why don't you name it in a corporate sponsor style? Maybe write to a few companies and get it a collar & coat with their name on it. Then in a few years you could confuse it and whoever else by changing it's name to something else. For periods when other sponsors were taking priority say in a curled up sleeping competition, bird catching or milk drinking contest you'd only be able to refer to it as your cat or my cat and you'd have to rip the labels off it's tinned/sacheted food or black them out.

Okay... I've tried google searching for variants of "cute pussy pics" for 5 hours now and I'm no closer to finding this site... give us a clue?

As for a name... if I get a cat I'll call it Phil, or Tina, depending on its gender. My neighbours are called Phil and Tina.

give us a clue?

Oh go on then.

This is the main one. It's a long story. If you'd told me in 2004 how much of my 20s I would spend looking at photos of kittens I'd have thought you were insane. I've moderated over 100,000 kitten pictures on that site alone. About 50% of what gets uploaded are ok quality kitten pics. Oh god, the things I've seen... *1000 yard stare*

Back on topic, though: I've just remembered how we named our first cats, years and years ago. We got a pair of black kittens and decided to run a competition on the web to name them. For some reason it was oddly popular for a week or so and crashed one of Blueyonder's servers a few times. The story even got into The Sun, in their Stupid Internet Crap column on page 45 or whatever. They ended up being called Stevens and Deeley.

Friend of mine has 2 cats. The first one is called Spike, as he looks just like Spike from Gremlins. The second one is grey, fat and likes to mess about with keyboards so he got named Edney.

I think you should name Cats after people you like.

When I got my two kittens 8 years ago I named one Carlos for Carlos Spencer (an All Black, but the Cat wasn't so racism hunters step away) and she is Ramona as Joey Ramone died that year.

Next Cat will either be Johnny for Johnny Cash or Elvis or if a girl Elvira.

Luckily I don't have kids, hate to think what I would lumber the poor souls with.

Can we have some pics of "The Unnamed Kitten"?

The kittenwar site is great 🙂

I knew somebody that named their cat Yoni, but I was too young at the time to get the joke...
