After a couple of days last week feeling a bit odd, on Friday my body announced itself with an inner ear infection which gave me vertigo. Spent the best part of yesterday in the local ED bothering staff with my problem.

I've had some issues over the years but nothing so far has been as bad as vertigo, what a horrible feeling, the internal dizziness, everything was too loud, every word I spoke took an age to think about and form on my lips, the delay in processing the simplest thing was unnerving, I felt like I was listening to something live but watching it with a 2min delay.
Got these tablets prochloperazine which helped me sleep for around 16 hours. Short stabbing pains around the skull leading to tremors across the body. Couldn't sit or stand, lying down was the only limited solution.

Woke up this morning feeling more coherent (to my own ears, not the OH!) but the tremors and little shocks going through my body are still there. I'd not met anybody with the symptoms before so wasn't sure what it could have been, at first I thought I'd had some kind of hemiplegic migraine as my face was being attacked down the left hand side with little shocks in the early part of the week.

Just a horrible feeling, anybody who suffers with this has my endless pity, left me wrecked and its got a couple of days to run yet according to the Doc.

On a side note, for a Saturday morning the ED was was relatively quiet amazing what Corona has done to keep a lot of wasters away.

White101,

I'm reluctant to advise putting more work on the medical services at this time, but persist until you receive a clear diagnosis.

I had ear / neck pains for a couple of years, and kept getting ear infections. I hadn't noticed, but my balance had deteriorated - I had found excuses for not cycling like 'too busy at work'. Fortunately, when the ENT consultant asked 'Have you any other problems, like balance?' and I replied 'Don't think so', my partner piped up with a very definite 'Yes'. I was referred to the balance clinic, where the Neurological Physiotherapist spotted my classic signs of vestibular schwannoma. An MRI scan soon confirmed. It wasn't growing quickly (1 to 2 mm per year) and wasn't cancerous, so I was booked in as not very urgent and had it removed about 6 months later (operation has a 98% survival rate).

The main point of my reply is, as my partner says: 'Doctors look for horses, not zebras'. They look for the common things first, and if treatment appears to work, stop looking. Vestibular schwannoma occurs for about 12 people in a million, so it took them a while to find.

I will favourite this topic, so if can I help, please post again. (I will also try to set up my profile with my email, and you are welcome to drop me a line, but I'm a bit of a computer numpty, so it may not work).

Alan

My condolences. I had a week of it a couple of years ago after a swimming pool induced ear infection.

Floored me mentally and physically. Now very careful to avoid ear infections, wear ear plugs for any water activities.

Jingle - I'd never consciously noticed any balance issues before, but when riding (road) on Monday or Tuesday I did think my cornering was a bit off and was aware of that, I do often having trouble walking through an obviously open door without having a knee doorframe interface!

Jam bo - I thought it odd for it to be an ear infection, especially when they talked about water in the inner ear and balance. I haven't been swimming for far too long and other than a shower at home nothing water related. Very strange, but very definitely the worst I've felt. A broken ankle kept me out of action for 3 months once and I'd have that over this!

White 101,

What cloudnine said 'Sounds a lot like Labrynthitis.. IANAD Though' seems reasonable.

If it doesn't get better when expected (no I don't know how much time to give it), don't just ignore it or live with it. Take personal responsibility for your own body; help the professionals to help you.

Best wishes,
Alan

I’ve had Ménière’s disease for 5 years, thankfully it’s now burning out, but I used to get vertigo attacks once or twice a month, just had to sit and sleep with a bucket until they passed, I’d be so wet from the swearing I’d have to put my clothes straight in the wash and shower. I was a mess but touch wood o haven’t had an attack for 13 months.

Was hoping this might have been a discussion of Hitchcock’s great film and its influence on Lynch’s Mulholland Drive.

Is disappointed.

I had an ear infection about 12 months ago after getting flu, and the infection never went with antibiotics - anyhow doctor says I have labyrinthinus, had it for about 8 months and it is bloody awful, balance is sometimes very tricky but the worst thing is when I lay down and put my head on the floor I nearly black out with dizziness so have to prop it up on a few pillows. First new something wasn’t right when I went to supermarket to get a tin of soup from bottom shelf and fell over and blacked out. Doctors said it can take a few years to fully go 😢
