I want to get a hifi set-up in another room but I don't have space for a conventional amp. Is there such a thing as a modestly priced tall/thin amp. Or could a standard amp be stuck on it's side?
Ta!
Not sure what your thought of 'modest' prices is, but a NAD 3020 is about £400 and would be perfect. It also has a great DAC in it so if you listen to mostly digital music then this is what you want.
I've been using and abusing a Marantz AV AMP on its side for several years. The poor thing doesn't seem to be suffering in any way. I have propped it on a couple of bits of wood so that it gets some airflow through its side/bottom.

The NAD D3020 looks good, NAD have had a good rep for donks.
Here you go, £165 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Audioengine-N22-Premium-Desktop-Amplifier-Black/dp/B0049OI08W
Have a look for some Tripath amps, particularly if you want to do it on a budget.
Nuforce Icon is exactly what you want.

I wouldn't trust anything made by Nuforce after their attitude in this http://nwavguy.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/nuforce-udac-2-drama.html another bullsh*t 'audiophile' company. Also 24w Peak at 8 ohms is going to be about 20w RMS which is pretty weedy if you don't know the sensitivity of your speakers.
Lepai tripath, look on eBay and for reviews. I have 2, they're awesome!
