Touch wood the girlfriend and I will be arriving in Verona this weekend where we'll be staying/working from for a couple of weeks enroute back to her place in Germany (as their rules preclude direct flights for non-EU).
Does anyone have any recommendations in the city or nearby? I know the northern part of Gada ok, but never stayed in the south.
We won't have a car full time, but could hire for a day or two. I'll have my bike & climbing hardness/via ferrata with me too if I can link up with the right place/people 🙂
Cheers in advance!
There’s a Roman amphitheatre, and the famous ‘Juliet’ balcony. It’s on the train line from Venice, to Bologna or Milan I think, but Lake Garda is a few stops along on that line. - Desenzano del Garda is pleasant enough. So you’ve got a couple of day trips there
The Juliet balcony is bollox.
There are a ton of great restaurants.
Day trip to Mantua by train, usually cheap train tickets.
Go up to Sirmione from Desenzano as it's mostly car-free on the peninsula and ferry to Malcesine from there if it's a long day out.
Juliet balcony was built by the council in the 1930`s. 😁 We did Venice and Lake Garda as day trips and the usual red bus tour. Although they are a bit expensive they are good for getting your bearings and finding places to return to.
Didn't rate the amphitheater tour. Local food speciality is Donkey. Use the train to get back to Germany up the Brenner pass, that was spectacular! Direct from Verona to Munich.
Paganella bike park is just up the road near Trento.
There’s a nice (steep) walk up above the open air theatre near Parco della Colombare which at sunset gives you a lovely view of the city. The balcony crap and tourist-y trap stuff around the amphitheater aside I really liked Verona. Home of the cheapest Aperol Spritz we found on a two week trip! Enjoy.
RM.
Antica Bottega del Vino is a lovely little restaurant in Verona. Great wine, amazing steak.
it's about 6 years ago now but I had a really memorably superb meal here on my honeymoon. Great food, and that ridiculously friendly Italian service you sometimes get, where they keep giving you free stuff for no apparent reason 🙂

Thanks all ☺️
If you head to Lake Garda, personally I find the south East side of the lake nicer. There is Sirmione right at the bottom of the lake which has is a beautiful walled town. Then from Lazise to Garda there is a nice promenade to walk/ cycle along and loads of restaurants with views of the lake.
Sirmione is beautiful.
Not to make people jealous, but as a first for me working remote from another country Verona is amazing!
Great food, coffee breaks at espresso bars, great for wandering / exploring after work.
Oh and fibre internet everywhere it seems for da zooms.
Thanks all for recommendations! Looking forward to getting to Garda at the weekend
