Off to Venice in a couple of weeks with the better half and wondered if anyone can recommend any great restaurants - ideally a proper hidden gem

I want to keep out of the touristy areas if possible - somewhere 'local'

Also, any other recommendations of other great things to do / see over a 3 day trip would be highly appreciated:)

Thanks

Campo Santa Margherita is great when you get tired of paying £10 a drink! It's where locals and students go for a drink, Caffe Rosso is a particular highlight in the evening (the wife was a big fan of the €1 prosecco) but a couple of the more rowdy bars there can be a touch dodgy.
Sod the gondolas and taxis, just get a vaporetto pass, sit at the front and stay on it all the way round, see all the sights. Then go walking, inevitably get really lost, then find an awesome restaurant or cafe that you forget the name of and have no hope of ever finding again or accurately recommending...this is kind of how it goes in Venice...
If you like art, the Peggy Guggenheim collection is excellent.

This. Walked and got the river bus everywhere, found some great little back street bars and cafés which I couldn't tell you he name of or where they were. The place is not so huge that you can cover plenty on foot and find the places that the tourist masses miss.

Theres not really much thats 'local' - hardly anyone actually lives in venice. But - just walk and walk and walk. You can't really make a wrong turn. Get water buses occasionally then walk some more.

As a hidden gem look out for the Querini Stampalia museum not so much for the museums contents but for the interior and garden by Carlo Scarpa

Then if you keep your eyes pealed you can spot other bits of his work around the city - theres a bonkers cantilevered sliding gate near the museum and the old Olivetti showroom in St Marks Square - which now is a shop selling terrible art but the design and fabric of the thing are gorgeous

Done that, found a great little restaurant full of Gondaliers on their lunch break, food was great and cheap. Getting lost is one of the best things to do in Venice.

+1 for the Peggy Guggenheim.

If you fancy a day on the beach you can get the water bus to one of the far islands with some nice public beaches on the far side of it.

The Restorante della madonna near the rialto bridge is pretty good for local specialities.

If you're into coffee, try Caffe del Doge in the back streets just over the Rialto Bridge on the west side.

We stayed in Dorsoduro, so ate there a fair amount. Pane, Vino e San Daniele and Ristoteca Oniga were both very good.

Agree with walking loads and getting lost loads, plus getting a vaporetto pass.

One of the nicest meals I've ever had was cuttlefish linguine in ink sauce. I think it's a local speciality.

Best approach to Vevice is on the ferry from Punta Sabbioni, in the late afternoon. Worth getting the ferry to Punta Sabbioni just for the view when coming back. Colours of the buildings with the sun on them are fantastic.

Its taken me ages to find the name of this restaurant so you'd better bloody well go. We had 4 nights in Venice for my wife's fortieth and had some top meals but this place was absolutely outstanding.

It seemed like very much a locals restaurant as the majority of the tables were occupied with large family groups of all ages. One of the best meals I've had. Not cheap but not much is in Venice and it was far from the priciest meal we had.

We found a good local cafe for local people - Vesuvius, it is in the Ghetto/Termini area. Got very sick of overpriced, under quality tourist places !

And watch out for dwarves in red raincoats.

The secret itinerary tour of the Doge's palace is a must, but it has to be booked a week or two in advance.

But you can't turn up and just go on it so we found out last time we were there

http://palazzoducale.visitmuve.it/en/pianifica-la-tua-visita/secretitineraries/

So book it now
