What is your top Vegan treat, snack, special occasion go to?

Be it sweet or savoury, hot or cold... share your favourite foods or drinks....

(Not exclusively for vegans, if your not on a plant based diet but like a certain something, share away).

For me, i struggle with vegan chocolate, but these bars from these guys are banging... like a Mars bar, but better...

Peanut butter does it for me and my Wife makes incredible peanut butter cookies (we have one each morning with our coffee).

Plenty of proper dark chocolate is vegan and really nice and Sainsbury's Plant Pioneers Chocolate & Caramel Pots are incredible.

Lost my sweet tooth entirely around the time I went vegan. Might be connected or coincidence. So at home it's raw veg mainly to snack on. Cauliflower, broccoli or raw mushroom. Maybe a bit of Tabasco or mustard with it. Home made spicy roasted chickpeas are good too.

Sweater stuff - Aha bars or ginger Nairn oat biscuits.

Not vegan, but I'm informed the recipe still works with vegan alternatives.

Chocolate Protein fudge
180g whey protein
6tbs cocoa powder
1/2tsp salt
100g of Nutella spread (or solid chocolate, peanut butter, biscoff spread, anything like that, obviously balance the cocoa, sugar, liquids etc if going for a different flavor)
60ml oil
1tsp vanilla extract
Milk of choice to soften the texture (circa 60-80ml)

Mix the meltable stuff and liquids (excl. milk) in a pan, add to the dry ingredients and mix, add the milk until you've got a smooth / spreadable consistency. Spread it into a tray and fridge overnight.

Supposedly that's 16 portions, in reality it's about 6 "mars bars" with about 30g protein in each.

Peanut Butter (crunchy, obviously) and Marmite on toast with some form of vegan compliant marge equivalent providing a solid foundation.

Marvellous.

I'm weird in that I really don't do snacks very often but I will occasionally mix a load of different seeds and a few raisins with tahini.

Other than that it might be a handful of nuts.

Peanut Butter (crunchy, obviously) and Marmite on toast

I keep hearing this. I adore both of those ingredients, but putting them together was rank. Am I doing something wrong?

Not enough of either of the 2 ingredients perhaps? Marmite needs to be the absolute maximum amount that you can get on the knife without it sliding off. Perhaps incorporate a twisting action to coat both sides of the knife.

Oh, trust me, "insufficient Marmite" is not an issue. I pretty much assumed it'd be the opposite problem and I'd used too much.

Maybe I should get a jar of the premixed stuff, is that worth a punt?

You're not alone, I thought it was disgusting and I'm usually game for these types of things.

Higgidy vegetable samosa rolls.

Oh, good call, they're amazing. I like to ding them for a few seconds to warm them through. The only problem is that there's four in a pack when really there should be a zero after that number.

^^^ yeah, those are amazing, after having them in a local pub & bought a 12-pack off Amazon, they didn't last a day 😂

I'm a big (meat) jerky fan but actually really like these as well (despite the fact they're probably made in a science lab):

For me, i struggle with vegan chocolate

Depends what kind of ‘chocolate’ you’re accustomed to.

I used to demolish family size bars of that sugar, palm fat and milk-powder £1 stuff (cacao) seemingly optional. Tried a few quality dark chocolate bars and finally settled on Lidl’s 85% fair trade stuff. It really is incredibly tasty but very different than the not-chocolate chocolate bars. Once accustomed I found one square can be chewed for a hell of a long time almost like chewing gum. It’s while chewing for a long time that you get the extra complex flavours. Thought I’d tasted most everything by 55 yrs old, but I’d obviously not really tasted chocolate. So now of an evening where once I may have demolished a bar of sugar and palm oil - I’ll instead nibble and chew at a big square 85% dark choc, preferably with a snifter of my favourite single malt.

Being flexible I can’t say that the Freddo frog doesn’t make an occasional appearance when I’m gagging for a Dairy Milk fix. Mrs P OTOH is good to her word and has the salted almond (?) Cadburys Plant Bar. I too can recommend that. Also any vegan choco by Booja Booja. That is top notch.

Other snacks? I don’t really have to think that hard about it but regular vegan-friendly snacks I enjoy are:

- Ten Acre Crisps (cheese and onion or hickory smoked)
- Those King’s plant jerky strips upthread, really tasty with a small kick of spice)
- All manner/flavours of fried peanuts rxp chilli nuts (I make my own spice blend but Lidls own are good)
- Smorgasbord - ie olives, Violife white block cheese squares, crackers, houmous
- Fresh fruit or handful of fruit and nuts
- Eat Real Chilli & Lemon Lentil Chips (Only problem is that even a big bag will disappear very quickly
- Hippeas Cheesy (like wotsits)

you can get 100% dark choc (which is vegan obviously, but without needing any weird "substitute" ingredients) from some of the boutique brands now like Montezuma or Hotel Chocolate. You definitely won't be eating a whole bar of that in one sitting 😂

^ Yeah I’ve tried a few 100% dark chocolates (including Montezumas) but not really liked any as much - maybe that’s a step too soon! The 85% one I have has emulsifier/d in it but then so do most milk chocolate bars (along with palm oil)

Co-op Irresistible Fairtrade Single Origin Dark 57% Orange (that’s a mouthful) is also v tasty for anyone with a sweet-tooth.

Inused to love Terrys chocolate oranges until they went shite, and have long been looking for some kind of vegan-friendly alternative with the same taste preferably as the old Terrys chocolate oranges. It turned up in the most unexpected place

- Lidl Alesto Cacao and Orange Bar

Someone video reviewed here

Almost too good to be true there any something like 40p they really do taste like the old fashioned chocolate orange (except with no rubbish in it£

This. Aldi's own brand crunchy peanut butter is 100% peanuts (no palm oil, salt or sugar or other bulking agents) and delicious. Also Asda/Lidl/Aldi's own brand yeast extract is nicer than Marmite. Little wiffle of decent rapeseed/olive oil instead of marge/spread if you fancy keeping it a little healthier.

I fancy trying a savoury peanut butter butty with salad leaves and slices of chili in it, I think that might be quite tasty.

+1 Aldi PB
+1 Samosas (Waitrose Plant Kitchen are delicious, but veggie samosas win hands down if from a proper Asian shop if you’re in a city)
Ginsters Moroccan chickpea pasties are ace
Frys Curry Pies too. OMGZZZ I’m putting one in the oven tonight and will be with eaten with mash and peas and a helping of Bisto southern-style instant gravy. It’s dead exciting - but they (Frys curry pies) are great as a snack on their own. Think I’ve paid 99p from farm foods for a pack of two
