Does anyone else get this? Is it a problem?

I've been using the VLTZ liquids from Totally Wicked (mostly spearmint menthol), and getting a scorched tongue recently, similar to what you get when you smoke a pipe incorrectly. And by the sounds of it, I don't even vape as much as some of you on here do.

Is this avoidable? Is it just down to the liquids I'm using?

I use the same liquids as you and I've never had an issue. What vape are you using?

@kramer, yes. I deliberately go to them, as they are an actual UK-based company that manufactures in Lancashire, as opposed to a dodgy importer of questionable substances.

We can all relate to that. 🙂

Is there actually any extra regulation in the UK that means that liquids and formulations mixed in Preston have to be of higher quality than those imported from Pyongyang?

I believe so, yes. In the states they are (or were) unregulated, hence the cases of Popcorn Lung that were from super strong liquids apparently?

Depends what you mean by regulation!  There are rules for Vapes sold in the UK.  The minimum standards of control are far below anything in say medicines, or even foods.  The enforcement of the regulations is I believe mostly reactionary rather than proactive.  All the regs are based on the underlying assumption that people are vaping as a substitute to smoking so it can't be that bad!

Imagine what it will be doing to your lungs then.

I know you'll keep doing it anyway, but still.

It can be a sign that your Vape is malfunctioning, either by overheating the liquid so your tongue gets heated up too much or it's underheating and you're getting hot liquid on the tongue. Totally Wicked are a reputable company that doesn't seem to be owned by any of the Big Tobacco companies so maybe worth emailing them and see if they have changed the formulation of that flavour?

That particular company have been very vocal in the call for proper regulation and enforcement on disposable vapes in particular, but liquids too, as a lot of them are shipped in from China and are indeed extremely dubious.

I've only ever used TW liquids. They cost a fiver each or £3.50 if you buy in bulk. Would I use liquids that cost less than a quid or a disposable vape for the same price? Not a chance!

I am aware how utterly ridiculous this sounds from someone who used to smoke 20 B&H a day

a podcast I listen to (Science Vs) did a vape episode a while back, the one thing I really remember (cos they kept re-iterating it!) was if you must vape, whatever you do don’t use menthol! As for whatever reason that flavouring emits many more toxic particles which you then breathe in. https://www.upmc.com/media/news/041123-vape-juice-toxic-to-lungs#:~:text=Using%20a%20specially%20designed%20robotic,compared%20to%20menthol%2Dfree%20juice.

actually the other thing I remember is it shouldn’t be called “vaping” as there’s no vapour involved - what you’re breathing in is an aerosol. Although that’s probably more difficult to market as it kind of brings to mind huffing a can of Lynx 😂 Plus the podcast did concede no-one who vapes would be smart enough to appreciate the difference anyway 🤣

Wait, wait, wait…genuine surprise. You mean there are people on this forum who actually vape. And they’re actually adults! Honestly, without joking, I’m completely surprised! I thought it was just kids from disadvantaged areas who vaped.

on a slightly separate note - you see so many kids vaping here in Belfast. But I spend a lot of time in Europe for work, mainly in france. It wasn’t until his week that I realised that I hardly ever see anyone vaping there.

I used to smoke rollies as a personal indulgence (i.e. not regulalry), but switched to vaping when one of my kids started, and found the nicotine to be extremely helpful for my mental wellbeing.

If I had to put money on anyone on this forum being a pipe smoker it would have been the OP 🙂

The enforcement of the regulations is I believe mostly reactionary rather than proactive.

Theres a very particular design aesthetic common across a lot of shops specialising in vapes - which seems to be to have a little furniture as possible, they seem to be such weirdly sparse places. With a sense that the staff are ready to grab the cash box and sprint out the back door at a moments notice when it all goes tits up 🙂
If the industry had a motto it would be 'I can't believe I'm getting away with this'

It’s God’s way of telling you that vaping is for idiots.

Yes, these idiots who are using vaping nicotine as a method of stopping smoking regular cigarettes, which are incredibly harmful.

And yet you are unable to fathom the distinction.

That's one element.  But there is also a generation of people who are taking up vaping having never smoked.  The way it's being  marketed now isn't about giving up smoking.

There were two lads in my gym changing room this evening who were evidently so desperate for a vape they'd plugged one of their vape devices in (at least it wasn't a disposable one) and were crouching down to toke on it while it was charging. They looked late teens, seems unlikely they were weaning themselves off cigarettes.

Except he's talking about vaping leading to well, more vaping, rather than leading to tobacco use.

They may be less harmful than cigarettes, but it is far too early to say it is harm-free over the long term, especially when it is being marketed at teenagers. Nicotine addiction is a tried-and-tested generator of profit, I suppose, we can't expect manufacturers to abandon it quite that easily.

IMO smoking is well cool. Whenever I see someone smoke a cigarette I think to myself "**** me smoking looks cool, I wish I still smoked".

In contrast whenever I see someone vaping I think to myself "what an idiot he desperately wants to give up nicotine but can't".

Don't advertise the fact that you lack self-discipline and willpower and instead use nicotine chewing gum or lozenges. That's what I did for literally years. Until I progressed to chewing matchsticks, before finally overcoming my childhood insecurities and oral fixation.

And if youngsters are vaping rather than smoking which the stats suggest that is still a net benefit - youngsters are always going to experiment - and the flavours that everyone presumes are designed for kids are actually very popular among adults, I know no one who uses tobacco flavoured juice.

EDIT: OP you should check out Decadent Vapours who I use because they are a Welsh business so even more local.

My best mate, she must have given up smoking and replaced it with vaping, must be 10/12 years ago. Well over ten years anyway.

She's still giving up seemingly... 🙄 😂

2024 is on the way. And all drinkers are to stop. No more wine, spirits, beers inc craft, or ciders or anything.

Have you seen the damage alcohol does. Heart failure, liver issues, quite a list.

Nicotine raises the blood pressure which could lead to heart issues, but by itself, it is less harmful than alcohol.

Well if you're going to reference a Government website it's worth remembering who's still making tax revenue from your addiction.

Taking up vaping is a bit like giving up fruit machines to play Roulette innit, the odds might be better but the house always wins.

Unless you're going to eventually wean yourself onto boring, old unflavoured air your just trading one set of detrimental health impacts for another that so far appear to be less damaging (but it's early days yet)...

Of course nobody has ever used bullshit and 'health washing' to flog lung additives before:

Mate of mine, back in the early 90’s, used to smoke one of those stinky French brands, probably Galoise, as well as cigars and occasionally a pipe, he was somewhat younger than me so early 30’s-ish, and one day he suddenly decided to give up. He put the partly empty pack he had in a desk drawer and never touched it, or smoked anything else again. I asked him recently if the pack was still there, and he said yes, it is. A bit dried out now, though…

It can be done if you’re determined to; you just have to really want to.
A friend from up the street swiped a couple of his dad’s fags and we went to the woods up the road and lit up. After a couple of puffs I put mine out, having decided the taste was disgusting. Never touched cigarettes since. Never fell for the concept of smoking imbuing a sense of ‘cool’ - that concept didn’t even exist for most of my contemporaries.

What about drinking ?. Was the first taste some illicit gained cans or bottle of cider, that someone went into the offsales for you, or were you up early enough to get the dregs of the bottle from last nights tupperware party.

You took a sip, and though, 'Yup, thats for me'

.

I was at a friends xmas party yonks ago and his 15yr old son and his mate had been allowed 1 bottle of smirnoff ice each(to last the entire party). Every time someone came to the door, the two of them will saunter over and stand near it and taking tiny sips,so whomever came in could see they too had a bottle of booze.

They did it because they thought it made them look cool. I expect everyone here started drinking probably for the same reason.

I drink Rum because I'm a grumpy old ****, and rum goes with the territory.

I believe smoking makes you and your clothes stink and it's antisocial. It lines the pockets of companies that continue to do everything they can to foster addiction to and continued use of a product which seriously harms the user, who is disproportionately from the poorer and most disadvantaged sections of society.

All the same, even speaking as someone who gave up 27 years ago, I am confident that a Marlboro red and a mug of black coffee is the finest breakfast known to humanity

Well yeah. We both smoked like chimneys when young so of course I'm glad she doesn't still smoke but I remember her talking about vaping at the time as a temporary thing, a crutch, to help wean her off tobacco.

I mean, it helped with that but it's clearly an addictive thing too, even if that might be more on a habitual sort of level.
Glad she's not smoking tobacco still anyway. 😊
