This is the second time one of my vehicles has started imitating an animal, this time its my 05 transit connect which makes a sound like you are repeatedly strangling a duck when braking to a stop....any ideas....before I go completely qwackers?
Had new shoes fitted a month ago, never noticed the noise before then? Took it back in and they readjusted one side which was too far adjusted and replaced a retaining pin which had come loose the other side(!) causing a horrible crunching noise and the wheel to lock when slow reversing.
I put new drums on a week ago...noise is worse if anything...going bonkers and it's my MOT in a week!
Noise sounds like a nasty rub in a section of rotation ie. speeds up/slows down with vehicle speed. Kinda sounds like a contaminated/glazed pad on a bike but deeper in tone.
Please abuse/help/guide me
You need another one, for Muster Mark.

Who's this mark chap?

Excellent work!
Sounds like you need a garage competent to work on drum brakes.
They don't sound to be very good so far.
Strange...
Mark? He's the rummest ol' rooster ever flopped out a Noah's Ark....

Edit. Actually read the fault 😳
Pleeeeease some sensible suggestions now?
First thought - remove nesting duck from under brake pedal.
My Transit never made those noises.
have a look and see if the inner arches(plastic) are secure, mine came loose and flapped into the wheel, rubbing a wheel shaped section away
spev- thanks for your sensible suggestion, there's nothing touching/rubbing externally so must be in the drum somewhere?
We used to always fit genuine ford brake shoes to Transits for this reason.
Certain brands of aftermarket shoes use quite a soft compound compared with the Ford compound, and it didn't matter what you done, they would squeal. New set of shoes would get rid of the noise.
Yeah mine wasn't touching unless the van was moving and I was going around a corner
Something to remember....
Aftermarket (non-Original-Equipment-Service) linings have to produce the same level of friction (ECE-Reg 90) but won't necessarily have completed any NVH refinement testing!
Brakes make noise - best to learn to live with it or face many frustrating hours changing parts at your cost to remove a noise that has no effect on braking performance 😯

While I sort of agree with the sentiment . Experience tells me otherwise if you don't buy the cheapest shortest bargain basement bits you don't tend to have this issue.
Last time I had a brake related noise issue was on bruneeps wife's car. We bought some drive tech stuff from the factors and it needed modifications with the file to release in the housing properly.
Problem solved!
So during fitting of the new shoes (at a garage) they didnt attach one of the retaining clips properly and it promptly fell off, caused horrible noise etc...I took it back and it was repaired.
BUT after stripping it down again I noticed they had actually replaced the clip with one that was smaller than the other 3 on the van- this allowed the shoe to move laterally very slightly and rub the backing plate on the inner edge of the drum causing the noise.
Having 'stretched' the clip to increase the hold, silent as a mouse!
Cheers all
