Trying to sort out hiring a camper van to travel round Vancouver island for a couple of weeks but I'm struggling. Has anybody out there done this, where did you hire camper , how did you get to the island, etc etc.
I'm guessing you would have to hire in Nanaimo.
Putting Nanaimo RV hire into google seems to bring up a few options.
Beyond that I'm afraid I can't help.
get to the island via BC Ferries or if y'r sailing inclined and licensed hire sail/power yachts greta way to travel the inlet.
Oh just hire in Van and drive across?
Hire in Vancouver, ferry from Horsehoe Bay or Tsawwassen will be the easiest bet I think. Should be plenty of camper choice in Vancouver.
I hired a RV from an expat english family in vancouver who also run a B&B. Private rentals are quite common. They had access to a bigger, fancier RV at the time too in case you need/want bigger. Very convenient if you need to rest your head after the flight and see van for a day or two. Lovely people, RV was great.

The ferry to the island goes from van to nanaimo. Quite nervy driving a great big RV onto the ferry, stick shift auto and wrong side! It's a nice crossing if you have a good day for it. We drove straight to Tofino, the roads were a bit windy but not too bad. The RV park was nearly full when we arrived, it was the only one in our travels which was, so book ahead if that's your destination.
I agree with @sweaman2 - Get a van in Nanaimo. Probably cheaper and you won't have to pay extra for the ferries if you got one in Vancouver. Great idea btw. I would love to do that when Summer rolls around. Some nice simple and laid back folks live there. Regrettably, I can't say I miss it.
We did this. Hired using Trailfinders, I think they used Drive Canada. The only thing to check on is if bedding is included. When we arrived we found out that it was not, so had to pay for it there (already on a tight budget), also had to pay a one off 'drop-off' fee which was a few hundred quid. Check out all the extra payments.
Picked up in Vancouver, drove over to the BC ferries crossing, went straight in to Nanaimo. If you have a days riding, check out http://islandmountainrides.com
While in Nanaimo, head over to the Dingy Dock pub after walking around Newcastle Island. Saw a fair bit of wildlife there and loads of humming birds.
We were talking about this kind of thing at work just yesterday, mental note made 🙂
Which I'll promptly forget.
@eazyrider, hope you found something by now bud. If not, wait a few decades and you 'print' your own van 🙂 - https://pinshape.com/items/12119-3d-printed-hippies-van - Not a fan of driving from Vancouver, catching the ferry, yada yada yada. I'd rather just get my ride in Nanaimo.
What's the alternative though? Fly from Vancouver to Nanaimo or Comox and then pick up your wheels?
I'm flying to Vancouver in June, picking up a car and then following my sister to Horseshoe Bay, BC Ferries to Discovery Bay and then follow her to her house in Parksville. Can't wait
