All 4 need done. 2WD Transit Custom. Don't want stuck in a muddy camping field. Thinking BFG Goodrich or General Grabbers. Or would something like a Michelin Cross Climate be a better choice?
I’m going to fit Cross Climates to our van (Citroen Relay) before winter. I think they’ll be better in mud and also in any snow.
I fitted Goodyear A/T 3s to the old T5. They had noticeably less grip in the wet than the original van tyres that I took off.
Grabbers here. They have been great. Not loud either. Be careful with the exact model if you go that route. For the sake of about £15 per tyre there is one which is terrible in the wet and one with a much better rating.
Michelin Agilis CrossClimates. Got them on the Tourneo Custom. Very good and last about 40k miles. Make sure they are the Agilis versions as the standard CrossClimates aren't rated for the weight of the van.
Got Crossclimates on all four wheels on the Tourneo and and on the front of the camper. Not had a problem getting off muddy sites yet and didn't need to fit the chains when we got caught out in an over night snow fall in the Alps.
Will be having them fitted to the rear once we are back out in it
I got general grabber AT3 on my hiace.
Be aware a lot of all terrain tyres won't have the necessary load rating for vans.
The at3 do in a 104/106 spec.
They have improved it a lot, still no getting away from it being LWB and RWD meaning it gets stuck easy when unloaded.
No noticeable noise increase or MPG change
For the love of God please dong make your van swamper with those god awful Goodrich things. Crossclimates all the way, you can just about get away with a high enough load rating on the standard crossclimates (at least on a transporter) rather than the agilis ones which are a lot more expensive.
Bfg at here.
They work.
Van was hopeless on flat wet grass.
Reversing up muddy banks no bother now.
Have excelled where others with winter tires have struggled.
I'll put up with the 2mpg downside.

Including the camping field at Inners ??? People with defenders were slipping all over...
If that's the one that was the Tweedlove 2019 one where all the vans were getting stuck then yes we were one of the last to leave, had to wait till after the podiums, and got onto the farm track with one run at it.
Could have been lucky and we did have the chains if needed but they weren't required.
I’ve got the Agilsys Cross Climates on my Transit Custom. I’m generally happy with them, but I have got stuck once in a car park and needed help getting out. I was a bit disappointed with their mud performance. I parked thinking I would have no problem and it wasn’t the case!
I wouldn’t be overly confident in a muddy field.
Running Avon AX7 on my T6 and liking so far! Come in a decent load rating but limited sizes so not sure if they will fit.
Agilis cross climates on the T5 winter wheels. Grippy, quiet and exceptionally hard wearing. I only wish they did them in bigger sizes then I’d use them all year round
Maxis Wormdrives
Vredstiens All seasons on my T6, proper load rating, wearing well and were very good in the snow, and still get 40+mpg on the m-way.
General grabber here
So much more comfortable and don't notice any extra noise

Yep, my bike spent a good 15 mins in the river then another 10m or so in the horse trough and that was just for the wheels to turn.... not clean.
We slid out (literally) a bit early on the Sunday as no danger of having to wait for podiums 😉
Nice looking van tricky. Much nicer Looking than the normal 20" rim slammed clones and considerably more practical.
Cheers trail_rat
it's been through a few incarnations. Bought it from someone who had lowered by 85mm on 18" alloys. Felt horrible to drive. Felt like i was sat on the bump stops. Bit the bullet this year and raised the suspension back up with steel rims and big tyres. Love it now
Crossclimates are a good call. For more off-road performance, even better in the winter and surprising lack of noise, have a look at Goodyear Ultragrips. I ran them on the last van (at a ridiculous 275/40 20 size) year round and they were brilliant. Low wear rate, great wet and dry grip. I've them in a less chiropractor funding 235/55 17 on the new van and they're actually quieter than the standard contis that VW sling on (which are truly special, like Pirelli p6000 special in the wet. Avoid totally. Will be going in the bin at the first sign of wear).
i`m going either Maxxis wormdrives or Maxxis Bighorns (just for the name!) on my VW t2. haha!
its in teh garage getting raised now.

Was that the field of mud and cow shit?
I slithered out of there on Avon AV12s.
Was that the field of mud and cow shit?
Yep...
I got so cold day 1 that I spent over an hour in the car with the heater on before I took off my wet clothes... day 2 I put on body armour just because it was an extra dry layer. Bloody ace though...
