Pretty sure there's plenty of people on here who have sold a camper van. I'm asking on behalf of my dad. He's selling their first van in advance of an upgrade. It's currently on Gumtree and FB Marketplace.
Does anyone have any recommendations of where best to advertise and any good tips on how to conduct the sale? My folks a bit wary about things like the test drive and insurance for example. I've never sold a vehicle so can't really advise that well myself.
If anyone's interested here's the description on the ad

Is it worth listing on here? Classifieds seem to have gone a bit weird and I haven't used for a while myself.
Personally I’d be wary of test drive and my experience of buying private similar - always owner has driven it. I’d be Wary of folk who may never have driven a camper or large vehicle. And even a minor shunt in a camper is a whole world more difficult to fix than a car (know from bitter experience).
Sellers market, if he’s clear from outset on test drive situation, buyers will know. Suspect not an issue for most.

Maybe, but I would never buy a vehicle I hadn't driven, and a ride in the passenger seat doesn't count. Not offering a test drive will, I suspect, put off a lot of potential buyers. If nothing else it raises a 'what are they trying to hide' flag
Thanks for input both.

I think this might stop people looking, as they're effectively asking people to get insured just to test drive. Not sure of way round it though - understand the concerns about bumps and scrapes but also I wouldn't buy a vehicle I'd only been driven around in.
Interested in anyone's particular experiences.
I've just sold mine. The lady who bought it was an ambulance driver but she brought her mechanic with her for the 2md viewing who had trade insurance. He drove it, they both went out in it, came back and bought it. I took pictures of drivers licence and insurance. I also had them on cctv driving off the drive.
Its stressful, but as above, I wouldn't spend £££s on a camper without driving it so its just something you've got to weigh up.
Due to covid at the time, I didn't go with them but I would now.
The other alternative is "webuyanyvan" and take the hassle out of it but maybe not as much money.
Can they part ex it?
Thanks Damascus that’s handy info.
We think they should have part ex’d and taken a bit of a hit on value to get hassle free.
The new van is already sourced with a deposit paid to the conversion firm.

You can buy insurance by the hour. I’ve used an app called Cuvva quite a bit.
I sold mine (20 year old home converted VW T4) using Autotrader last summer. They have a dedicated camper site.
I think ebay was the same price for a classified ads but the big plus with Autotrader is that they give your ad a temporary phone number that forwards to your phone or mobile. This means that when sold you don't get people for weeks after ringing you up as the phone number is gone.
The guy who bought mine didn't drive it but his mechanic mate who came with him and had commercial insurance did.
Mine went for 6k. Apart from pricing to sell (not speculate) I don't know whether there is a sweet spot of value for different sites.
Having 10 years of documentation to hand helped the sale as they could see I was fairly genuine.

Check what payload the new van will carry. A lot are now plated at 3500kg because it attracts younger drivers with more restricted licences, but you can't always carry the full complement of passengers along with fresh water, fuel and luggage.
An average male + average female + two children aged 10 and 12 with a full tank of fuel is maybe 300kg. Some coach-built motorhomes have payloads around 350-370kg, so four bikes in addition and you're done.
I'm assuming that your dad could take advantage of a greater plated weight and a greater payload so it might be worthwhile checking with the company
My experience...Loads of tyre kickers on Facebook, had the advert on for months and no sale.
Put it on Autotrader with same price and photos, sold within days to the first guy who contacted me.
