Hi All.

Can anyone help with this please?

Engine Battery in my van is kaput i think - charged it overnight twice now and only getting 9-11v on the meter.

It a Ducatto Multijet 100 2.2ltr

This is the battery that came out...

Existing Battery

I put the Reg in on halfords website and it says nothing in stock but when i used the little computer in the store it recommended this...

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/batteries/car-batteries/halfords-hcb075-calcium-12v-car-battery-4-year-guarantee-950600.html

I was doubtful

I asked the PFY in the shop but he was generally clueless.

After a bit of research I think i need this....

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/batteries/car-batteries/halfords-hb019-lead-acid-12v-car-battery-3-year-guarantee-952499.html

Can anyone confirm.

I imagine halfords is not the best place to buy them anyway.

What parameters to i need to match with the old battery for a good swap, i assumed the Amp Hours was important?

I did check the manual but it just helpfully suggests taking it to a dealer. 🙂

All realtive as can't afford to drive it anywhere anyhow. sob 🙂

also:

Cold cranking amps (CCA)
Length / width / height
Terminal layout
Terminal type
Hold down lip or not
and whether the van has 'stop-start'

If it's not stop/start, it's *probably* an 017 or 019 battery, but please check the dimensions.

What year is the van? If it's fairly recent, they will drain the starter battery in a few weeks if not used.

I'd fit the biggest [AH] battery that will physically fit and check that the terminals are the same way round as the old battery otherwise you may have an issue with the leads reaching.
Halfords is the last place I buy batteries from now.

Thanks Tillydog

Its 2009 so not start stop. That halfords 019 one is the same dimensions but the CCA is different i think?

Higher is better for CCA - don't go for less than the original.

Good advice above - measure it, check terminal layout, and go for the highest CCA.

Halfords can be rubbish at a lot of things, but in their defence I’ve always found them ok for batteries. I have 7 or 8 vehicles, so used to get through a lot of batteries. Halfords are usually decent value, easy to return if there is a problem, and seem to be as reliable (if not more so) than even some of the ‘big’ brands, so I wouldn’t entirely discount them.

Thanks everyone. Great advice

I might go for this one over the Halfords one...

Thanks STW!!

battery ordered and fitted.

Actually went for a Varta one over the bosch as apparently (according to some other people on the internet) they are the same company/factory and it was £10 cheaper. Plus i've still heard of them.

AS an aside, i found out the other day that charging your old car battery in the kitchen is not only stupid but it sets off the carbon monoxide alarm!

Evacuated mine and the neighbours and very nearly called a plumber. doh.

Something to do with leaking Hydrogen i think.
