Been written to by Brentacre insurance to advise they can no longer insure my modified day van. Apparently I had too many claims (2 in 3 years). Who to try next?

Is that cancelled mid policy or refused to cover a renewal request? This I understand to be a very important distinction.

As above, if it's been cancelled then I believe that has serious ramifications on future premiums. If it's just a refusal to provide cover at renewal time that's fair enough.

I'm certain the ombudsman would take a very dim view of the company just deciding mid-policy that you were too much risk.

Or has OP modified the van, then told the insurer and they have said they wont insure.

need more info

Son had similar issue with Brentacre on his modified car, but you've apparently 7 days for you to cancel the policy, that then stops it being a policy cancelled on you, as it has serious effects on insurance renewals. Look into this immediately.

Son's issue was an engine swap after one died. Exactly the same engine, but the code was one letter different (VW/Audi group).

Yeah, having to answer 'yes' to the standard 'have you ever been refused insurance or had a policy cancelled' question is not something you want.

But normally that would only be due to a voided policy or refusal to renew due to misconduct/inaction on your part - non-disclosure, dodgy claim etc. Multiple claims wouldn't on their own give the insurer a legitimate reason to void the policy.

Is it something to do with your modifications, or the way you've declared them?

Brentacre are usually very good when it comes to mods unless BHP is increased or the value is massively increased. Hope you get sorted OP.

Long story but I'd rather walk than give Brentacre a penny.

Seems an odd reason to cancel a policy - surely just put the premium up [massively] next renewal.  If mid-term then it doesn't sounds like the reason at all.

Good luck getting any help from the Ombudsman. I had an email from them this morning asking me to confirm an answer to a question which they asked in their last email 6 weeks ago. Hopefully they'll ask a new one in less then 6 weeks and we can make some progress.

So far they're just as bad as the insurance company that I'm trying to complain about.

So converted a Transit Custom into a day van when I bought it 4 years ago. Used Brentacre to insure  and disclosed all modifications. Totally unchanged but had a couple of claims in past 3 years. Brentacre said they can’t renew my insurance at end of this month because of 2 claims.

One was wing and door damage, my fault, one was strong wind ripped door out of hand and damaged it and a 3rd was someone rear ended me and that was non blame as they admitted and settled it with their insurers.

That's insurance companies. Two claims in three years is higher than average  They may have been no fault but they will figure you are a high risk. But I don't know why they don't just offer a silly premium.

Does being refused at renewal count as a refusal you need to declare in future?

Phew. This is easily solved by finding a new insurer at renewal.

Insurance being cancelled for some reason, you do not need to go there.

bet you wish you hadn't claimed for the door now   I had similar issues on 2 claims on house insurance (storm then a burglary).  now I've massively ramped up excess and will not claim for small issues the implications are too big, even though that is actually why you have insurance

Adrian Flux might be a reasonable alternative.

good that’s it’s not cancelled. A whole world of pain lies there.

Insurance is getting to be just one step away from a scam. We all pay good money to insure our stuff then are afraid to claim when things go wrong. Even with protected no claims etc we’ll either pay a massive premium hike or risk something this. It seems nuts.

Forgot to say, we’ve been using comfort for our vans/ motor home over the years. They’ve been good.

it is, in effect exactly the same as a casino. I bet you £££ that something doesn’t happen to me / my car / house / some other possession over this time period.

Except of course you don't have to go to the bookies just because you own a little blue pen and they're unlikely to throw your out because you picked a few winners this year.

Brentacre and Adrian Flux are both underwritten my Markerstudy so its possible that AF won't be interested either. Justkampers claim to do bespoke self-build policies. I've not used them so this isn't a recommendation.

This is who my current beef is with. I can't even drive my own car until someone, somewhere pulls their finger out but it's been 4 months so far.

Makerstudy aren't even the insurer it's West Bay Plc based in Gibraltar so it's a complex web of complete indifference.

Yes its Marker Study who settled last claims so will try elsewhere.

I'd rathe take my chances in court than use marker study.

Horrible horrible people*

*Wouldn't authorise treatment on my old man in France after a non fault claim - without speaking to the (sole) policy holder ... Who was in coma .

Thanks all, tried justkampers, sorted out a miles better policy and cheaper than previous. When I called Brentacre some little scrote spoke to me like I was an absolute moron when I tried to get details I needed. Won’t be using them ever again.
