So my insurance on the T5 is up for renewal and at the same time work have asked me to get business insurance added on as they want me to travel between two sites during working hours, i wont be carrying any goods, ill literally be leaving one site to go work at the other site and then maybe returning to the first site before the end of my shift or just going directly home from the 2nd site, ill be doing around 2000 miles a year between the two sites

Work have said they will pay the difference between my normal renewal price and what the extra is to add on business insurance for the 2000 miles plus my fuel with extra on top for wear and tear

Spoke to my insurance company who said my renewal is £460, i asked them to add on 2000 miles of business insurance and explained i wont be carrying any goods just travelling between two sites

They went away and checked then came back with a new quote of £980!

My company are good but i cant see them paying me £480 to do 2000 miles a year, other employees with cars spoke to their insurnace companies and were told it would be an extra £35 a year for 2000 miles of business use

Tried a few comaprison sites and when adding on 2000 miles of business use it still adds £200+ to the premuim

So does anyone know of any good van insurance companies that will suit my requirements at a reasonable price?

Not your problem surely. You are helping out your employer rather than them supplying a vehicle.

Employer dosent supply vehicles for travelling betweeen sites, otherwise they would have to have 10+ pool cars and we would all have to travel back to the main site rather than going straight home from the 2nd site hence they ask certain employees to add business insurance onto their current policy and they pay for it plus fuel and extra for wear and tear

I like doing this because it makes my work more varied, gets me out of one site for a bit and means when i finish at the 2nd site im only 5 mins from home so well worth being my problem

I asked for class one business use

Might be something to do with you specifying the 2000 miles? When I changed mine I literally just changed it from domestic and commuting to d/c and business, no other info. Went up maybe £30?

It’s because you have a ‘van’ that your using as a car (like me), otherwise it would be just a few quid extra.

However, that’s not your problem, as above. Simply send the figures to your gaffer and let them sort it!

Yep, it's because it's a van. All kinds of possibilities for business use which cars generally don't get used for. Yes, I know you won't but you could.

But as above, that's the employer's problem if they're paying for it

Reminds me of my work telling me I couldn't use my land rover for client meetings as it was too old and didn't meet their age policy.

Excellent. I'll take a taxi and expensive it then as you don't pay for my choice of vehicle.

This is their issue not yours.

Standard mileage rate is 45p a mile so if your work are going to pay insurance and fuel it will probably work out about that and they don't have to supply a vehicle. Bargain for them.

My t5 is insured as a in-build camper with all mods declared (free to amend at any time) but as a farm works van including towing sheep trailers. £440 fully comp. (£65 of which is fees!!!). Brentacre Insurance. Give em a call maybe

I used to insure my van with direct line for similar use. They assume that a van used for business is also used for S,d&p. I'm still with them some 10 years later though drive a car these days.

I don't know about vans which could be treated wildly differently, but when I last added on business use for the car I didn't have to specify a type or estimate mileage (how could they check that anyway?) and it was about ten quid extra for the year.

Have you run numbers through a comparison site like comparethemarket?

Standard rate is 45p/mile in your own vehicle.  If you were in a company-provided motor you wouldn't see anything like that, I think last time I had one it was 12p/mile.

My car insurance is less with 2000 miles of business insurance compared to without it.

I strongly suspect as it's a van it could be deemed to be doing can-based grafting despite your explanation.

Have you done a confused.com comparison with business insurance out of interest?

A couple of years ago now but my van didn't cost anything significant extra for work use (similar to OP, just travelling to different workplaces, I wasn't a van-based business).

Most recently I was with Lloyds. It's not impossible I was wrongly insured but I was trying to be careful/correct about it.
