It's been a while since I hired a van, but the best I can find is £120 for a single day for a lwb transit type. I'm sure when I last did this it was less than £50! Any ideas? Tried all the usual national hire firms.

Cheers,

Last time I hired a van, I booked a couple of weeks in advance and played around with the days (I was flexible).

Ended up with a mahoosive LWB transit for £32 from Enterprise - a Tuesday if I remember rightly.

I recently had a 7.5t truck with tail lift (biggest possible on old car licence)for a day at about £140 from a local company linked with Sixt. LWB Transit size is around £75, so your deal sounds dear.

My friend hired a luton style van with tail lift last saturday for £65. As spacemonkey says your location would be useful.

^^^^
THIS

Enterprise (and more locally, Kendall Cars) can be very competitive on van hire. I paid £111 for 2 days with a LWB high-top Transit last year.

Hmm. I'm in Sheffield. Perhaps it's expensive because I was only looking for a Saturday - I'd rather not take a day off work. I have found a cheaper place in Manchester but they only do 2-day hire over weekends.

I hired a Luton van with tail lift for about £50 from Arnold Clark in Sheffield. It was through an online broker type thing

If you check your local B&Q they usually do a van hire by the hour service.

I have used my local one (halifax) a couple of times.

I guess it depends on the time/miles you need it for.

You should definitely be able to get on overnight / weekday for around £40

*. Bookmarked

Slight aside, anyone estimate roughly how much would a fully loaded luton style cost in fuel today for say, 400 mile round trip (mostly Motorway)? I have nooo idea... 😳

You'll only get around 20mpg in a fully loaded Luton van, maybe up to 25 if you drive like a vicar but low teens if you try to cruise at 90...
So around 20 gallons of diesel which is about £100 at the moment.

What about getting a Man-with-a-van, if it's just a 'delivery' trip?

Cool, Arnold Clark are winning so far at £70 for 24hrs of LWB transit. I expect that can be beaten down a little though if I go through a broker.

The best man-with-van prices start at £190 for a day - I'm doing about 300 miles.

I've always found AC very good for car / van hire. Usually pretty cheap and, surprisingly, not total scum. I've never taken out their damage waiver and never had any bother returning vehicles.

After taking the fuel off it'll 'only' cost an extra £80, so really depends on how much you value you're own time.
