I've been checking my ebay alerts for various vans about 50 times a day for a few weeks now and I've got serious fatigue.

Anyway, this one popped up yesterday and I pounced on it. I went to see it this morning and kind of agreed to buy it based on a test drive next Saturday as I can't have it until it's been through the workshop.

£8k no vat. 97k miles. Decent mot history. Obviously not been trashed, it's very clean inside and out. Just traded in by a retired bloke who used it to carry his motorbikes around.

But... the Boxer/Relay/Ducato family is one of the few vans I've never driven or been driven in. I can't find any horror stories or well known common problems. Most people complain about uncomfortable seats.

It's a 2.2 which I believe is a chain driven Ford Tranny engine so hopefully nothing will snap on the first day like the last time I bought a van.

I'll be doing more research this week but if nothing puts me off I'll be driving it home next weekend.

We have a Relay camper coversion and it's great to drive. Also had no serious issues with it over the three years we've had it apart from normal age and wear related stuff.

I run two of ‘em. One as a work vehicle and one as a camper.

Both drive around fully loaded and I’ve had zero issues from either, which is more than I can say about the VW and Ford I previously ran!

We run a lwb at work. Nice to drive, pops along on motorway nicely, it’s a 2.2l Seems to have gone through the front tyres quite quick. They were winter tyres on all year round so may have been a soft compound thing. Door runners and stays are a bit flimsy (compared to the Vito we also run) but other than that it’s a good van.

Got a 2.2 Fiat Ducato at work on an 11plate - absolutely abused and dented to buggery but has always run fine with no issues.
No rust. Good vans.

A friend bought a nice cheap one that had some light crash damage. Thinking back it must have been nearly 10 years ago.
He had a problem where the fuel pump was disintegrating, which was contaminating the whole fuel line. At the time he didn't like the £1000 bill, so sold it on for a profit.
Apparently it was a known issue. I don't know if it was a particular age or engine that was prone to it, but given the age of this tale it's probably not relevant anyway.

Plenty about, so I don't think you'll be ok. Looks ok and good value.

Generally the fiat is the best of the bunch to have as it runs an Iveco/Fiat engine not a PSA one, this is especially true with newer euro 6 stuff. 4 year old one one the ramp at my mechanics a few weeks ago when I dropped something off, I slightly jokingly said "Has it had a new engine yet", that's what it's here for, 74k on the clock.
Check that the 2.2 of that vintage is chain driven not wet belt (cambelt inside the engine where a chain would be save cost), but I think the change was euro 6 again.

Just don't buy a 2.0lt euro 6 version.

Bodies are galvanised,

Suspension is a little crashy, Peugeots don't have the nice holder above the windscreen,

I like them, they are wider than all the other vans, so if below the 6' mark are comfy to sleep width ways in.

The bloody handbrake which requires arms the length of an orangutan to operate! And don't wear a long coat and get out unless you want it to catch on said handbrake resulting in an undignified exit from the vehicle😂  Other than that our work one has been good and is nice to drive.

Yes, it took me a few attempts to locate the handbrake! I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.

This is a 2014 so euro 5. Definitely no wet belt nonsense. I wouldn't have another one of those.

I've had the ebay alerts set for the Iveco engined Ducato as well but nothing has shown up in ages.

Sounds promising so far but I haven't had a chance to do any thorough reading. Stand by for lots of leisure battery/solar panel/what awning threads. First essential purchase is a decent rear seat.

Owner of a 2014 Relay. there is an issue with these age (does say 2012, google ford puma oil pump failure)) of oil pump chucking it at 80000 miles I changed mine for 100 quid in parts and 4 hours work (not a difficult job, hardest bit cutting sump off block without damage). I done mine out of concern as it would take the engine out

I've been on the phone to the dealer today who put my mind at ease a little. They've gone through the service history and the last full one was in January this year. It's been through the workshop and all it needed was a ball joint which is being fitted today. The various owners club members can't agree on any common issues as long as they're looked after. I'm willing to put it in for water pumps, oil pumps etc if it they haven't been done.

So, I've bought a train ticket and my insurance and I'll be there by 10am on Saturday. I'm still willing to talk away if anything doesn't feel right. But if it's all good, I'll be racing home to catch the end of the Leogang world cup. If not, I'll be stranded in beautiful Boro for the day.

The paint falls off them, look carefully at the front edge passenger side of the bonnet in your pics, is that just a reflection or is primer?

Some of them seem to be really bad for it.

My 2019 hasn’t started to shed the paint yet and has so far been an excellent van.

https://motorhomer.com/threads/fiat-peeling-paint-hammerite.42303/

I’ve seen some really bad ones with massive patches missing.

I've heard that about the paint. That is a missing piece on the front of the bonnet but was the only bit I could find. I even climbed up to look at the roof.

Flaking paint is all the excuse I need to go full Raptor job!
I really like this stuff...

looks like a bit of a bargain.
i'm a bit jealous.

lovely square interior if youre doing a camper conversion (or indeed, anything at all, in the back)
The only thing im not keen is the boxy square exterior. The aesthetics of a house brick

cant win em all though.

Just Google any combination of 'raptor liner van paint' or similar and see lots of examples. I just wanted to show the texture for anyone who's not familiar with it. It's incredibly tough stuff and very easy to apply. Well within DIY abilities if you have the space, which I don't really, but I'll be looking for somewhere to do it.

I've been looking at vans literally every day for months and months. There's not many bargains to be had but I've missed a few due to lack of commitment. This time I had to jump on it.

I actually like the boxy shape. It's the biggest van I can comfortably fit on my drive and those vertical sides will help it fill every inch. They do feel huge in the back compared to a VW or Vivaro or similar.

It won't be a full camper conversion as sometimes you just need an empty van. First purchase will be some kind of quality rear seat with Isofix points. I'm not going crazy until I've driven it for a while and got some confidence in it.

I picked this up yesterday and I don't want to jinx it but it's lasted a day longer than my last van did.

Also, someone in the office where I bought it from (Evans Halshaw Middlesbrough) is a member on here and saw the thread. Hello if you're still lurking.

The journey home was thankfully uneventful but slow and noisy. I've been away from big vans for a few years I kind of forgot what I was in for.

It looks like a giant, square block but it almost fits in a regular parking space. I haven't checked but I bet it's no longer than a lwb T6. It's just high and wide.

On board thermometer is about 40 degrees off.

I've got a built in reversing camera...

...but a basic head unit with no screen.

Loads of room for a 'tent on wheels' style camper. Not doing a full conversion.

Hopefully it just works for a while so I can spend money on fun stuff rather than blown up stuff.

Probably won't get to the Alps in it this year but big trip next year 100%.

That’s an after market camera, they probably took the screen with them when they sold it on/part ex’d it.

The thermometer probe is in the drivers side mirror casing at the bottom, know to fail, easy repair.

We went to France camping in ours, 10 days after picking it up, with a very make shift internal. Wanted to make sure it was good before carrying on, besides we’d sold our T5 to buy it so didn’t have many options!

Thanks for the info. I knew there was a version of this with a built in camera so I assumed that's what it was.

I might pick up one of those screens that goes where the rear view mirror should be. It would be a huge help when reversing it onto the drive.

Thanks for the thermometer knowledge I probably never would have bothered finding out where it is! I might fix it now though.
