Got new car choice narrowed to a 63 golf or a 14 octavia same engine but with different power outputs the golf having the lower, mileage price etc pretty much the same, both estates. Is the higher power version the better option engine wise to go for?

Thanks

Golf estate with under the 150ps (148 bhp) engines would be under powered in my experience. If it has to be one of those definitely the more powerful one. We had a 116 TDI in a golf estate of a similar age and even with diesel torque it was not enough. The 150ps is much, much better.

Not sure I'd agree. We have 1.6 Golf diesel estates at work and they are slow af. I've got a Golf with the 1.4 TSI and it feels much quicker in comparison. Obviously not fast, but I wouldn't say it was underpowered (they're not heavy cars).

In response to the OP I'd say get the one you prefer driving. Personally if I was struggling to choose after a test drive I'd probably go Octavia due to more space and more power but similar running costs

Not a huge difference between the engines.  All else being equal, unless you need a bigger boot, go for the Golf, as it's not a Skoda.

Is the 63 a Mk7? Iirc there is a decent weight reduction between the Mk7 estate and Mk6 estate (which is really a face lifted Mk5). Our 1.6 was a Mk6 while the 2.0 is a Mk7.

Got to change ours this month and would really like one with the new 1.5 tsi engine (150ps again). Not many around though .

I’d be more interested in the specs, as the golf might have the adaptive cruise control, whereas the Skoda is unlikely to have it on that age

I have an A3 Sportback with the 125bhp 1.4 TFSI and it is quick enough when driving solo or with one passenger.
