have a few boards up and spot a really old cable (black henly) traced it back to an old blanked off round pin socket where behind the plate it is terminated in a choc block.

I am pretty certain these wires / sockets are long dead, however when I check it with the ac pen it flashes up 2 bar.  Normally it flashes 6 and beeps when on a mains circuit.  but it' showing something.

any ideas?  could it be picking up some residual voltage from a close by live wire?

I don't need to remove it but if prefer to.  any more conclusive way to test?

Those non contact pens are fine for a quick check, but i'd be putting a proper tester on there to double check before i started sticking my fingers in. A basic multi meter is cheap enough.

It could be an induced current from a live connection running in close proximity to the (hopefully) dead cable you're testing.

just checked the choc bloc with a multi meter.  showing 0.4volts and no continuity so must be induced current
