I have finally got my maestro card for my swiss bank account. sadly it's just a bog standard current account, I'm not yet at the level of income for private banking. anyway, it lacks a security number on the back. can anyone who has a European card enlighten me how to use it to pay for things online?

Can't help you as mine (the Spanish one)came with the security code. You are allowed the debit facility, aren't you?
My basic UK bank account came without debit facility.

You don't, you do a Überweisung, basically a bank transfer or use a credit card (or at least thats the system in Germany).

In Holland there is a system of payments - iDeal - which require your bank card and a card reader - you provide your pin and a transaction number and type an answering number in to make the payment. Could it be something like that?

bugger it's looking a bit silly. will go to UBS in the morning if they haven't gone under and ask someone in a suit.

My French cards all have security numbers, sounds a bit odd?

Maestro can be a real pain in the proverbial too - lots of places don't take it. Ask if they can do you a Visa card?

My German maestro only works in cash machines in the UK, can't use it in shops or to buy petrol. Its not the international system it claims to be.

Possibly a stupid question but is it Visa or Mastercard or neither? In Canada (where I'm living currently) they are just now rolling out Visa Debit as the new "big thing". Currently we all have Interac which is a Canadian only chip and pin system. Accepted in almost all shops but not useable online at all, for that you need a separate credit card. They also don't really do direct debits or online banking to any great extent.

You could ask them for a "chargecard" which gets automatically debited from your account every month anyway to save you taking till you're 107 to pay for the pink Ferarri. 🙂
