I want to build a bit of an outdoor kitchen in my back garden, and because I am going to be raising my patio bricks to replace them with gravel, was thinking of recycling them for use as the structure for a permanent bbq and counter area.

is this possible? What should I know? Can patio bricks be used for a bbq, or do I need special heat-resistant bricks? Can patio bricks be treated or painted for heat resistance?

Please forgive my ignorance, but any info will be appreciated.

If you’re talking about concrete block paviors then I’d say that you wouldn’t be able to use them.

They dont have a surface or indentations or holes to allow the mortar to bond to them sufficiently to build a stable structure.

No frogs 🐸

I was just going to say what PP said. Brick setts aren't designed to be laid with mortar in the same way as conventional bricks. Plus, they'll only have one finished side (the side you see) and will look odd when laid in other configurations.

Very old bricks had no frogs. The frog from my understanding is from the ram compacting the bricks. Newer bricks are of course harser than old bricks.

I'm not an expert either but going by how bricks are made, I'd imagine they'd be ok.  But as said - you need the holes/frogs to build stuff easily I'd imagine.

The main factor which I'm dissapointed in you perchy for not noting is that they won't bond correctly on corners that 15mm makes all the difference to today's top draw bricklayers 😂

But as above unless you use a shit load of sbr on them they ain't going to bond very well.

Bed joint reinforcement?

Bed joint reinforcement won't help with the vertical bond between courses. Personally for something like a bar b I'm sure they'd be fine for a while but if the water then frost gets in,  it will easily seperate the coursing.

They'll be fine structurally. You aren't building a skyscraper. There's a chance you might damage them with heat bit unlikely with a regular barbeque.

Good to recycle them if you can. The building industry is generally pretty bad at this. The house over the road to us is on their 5th skip for their minor building works.

I'd be surprised if they werent up to the job. Most of our walls are just heaps of stone with the odd dab of mortar and they've lasted over a hundred years so far. The garden walls don't even have the mortar!

I assume it's easily done if one is posting from a mobile device - where the empjis are built in to the keyboard functionality.

If posting from a PC etc., you might be able to type some uniconde shortcut to insert them, or perhaps wait until someone develops an empji keyboard with extendable panels to insert your cute froggy faces and lewd aubergines.
