I'd read last week about the red mist where republican votes get counted earlier due to small rural districts finishing their count first but this feels bigger than that , at least that's the feeling I get from the radio coverage , listening to LBC at work .

There needs to be a long hard look at what it is that creates such a gap in ideas and understanding. There is such a gulf between ‘how is he even the candidate’ to the fact that it’s close enough that it looks like he’s winning. Ugh, this is terrible!

Hard not to give up on the concept of democracy at this point.  I mean, an obviously senile old doddering narcissistic fascist who can barely string a sentence together, vs an intelligent articulate thoughtful…..black woman.

Even if Trump wasn't a bit of human garbage, the fact he's 78 would put me off voting for him.

My dad is 2 years younger and there's no way I'd want him in charge of anything more taxing than the weekly shop.

America .. and by that I mean the majority of American voters – are truly bonkers.

Why? It’s this sort of arrogance which has resulted in a fascist being elected. If you tell voters there is no alternative to a system that doesn’t serve them the voters will respond with a big **** you! America is about to learn the same lesson we did in 2016. You think the democrats would have learned the first time but they’re so far up their own backsides that can’t see what is obvious to everyone else.

Western liberal democracy has been devoured by oligarchic neoliberal capitalism and voters have decided they’ve had enough.

That's not the only theory for why Trump gets votes Daz. The changing demographics of the US leading to people holding their noses and voting for whoever is the most anti immigration is another.

FFS it’s not the voters, it’s the **** centrist do-nothing more of the same idiot politicians who think they can serve up the same shit sandwich election after election and assume everyone will still vote for them. The Democrats have got exactly what they deserve.

Yes of course the ‘they’re all racists’ narrative. Maybe they are but ask yourself why? It’s all very well prizing individual rights but keeping a roof over your head and your kids fed will always take priority.

In this case of course they’re the problem. They told people they had no alternative but to vote for Harris and that the people’s concerns about the cost of living, billions being poured into foreign wars, and concerns about immigration were irrelevant and secondary to keeping the Dems in power for no other reason than the fact that Trump is a horrible man. What the f*** did they think would happen with that arrogant and patronising message?

That how American politics works, it's personalities and sound bites. One of the reasons Harris has lost is people didn't know who she was despite being VP for the last term. That's on Biden though who he actually had a shot at a second term.

Well done Americans - you've proved to the world how racist / sexist / chauvinistic you really are. I really couldn't care less if Trump builds a wall round the country and you spend the next 4 years mass shooting each other with your 2nd amendment assault rifles - it's Ukraine my thoughts and prayers are directed towards. All that death and bloodshed to be now sold down the river in what will be Trumps idea of 'peace'.

Rape allegations - fake news
Fraud trial - victimisation, fake news
BFFs with epstein - fake news
Tried to overthrow election - fakenews

When the Internet exists and you can put any old nonsense out there some of which seems to be eject funding from Russia!

On top of that has any government survived an election post inflation bomb?

Fertile ground for populism

Oh give over. See above, all they've done is demonstrated that they are angry and pissed off at the fact they haven't benefitted from economic growth.

The only possible positive from this debacle is that the rest of the world and particularly Europe stops following Americas lead and starts to do stuff for itself.

Europe is going the same way. Far right govts in Italy, Austria, Hungary. Far right parties on the brink of power in places like France and advancing rapidly in the UK, Germany and others. We're just a few years behind the US, but the one thing we can guarantee is that liberal centrist parties across Europe will not learn the lessons in the same way that the Democrats have failed to.

Sure, there’s definitely some truth to that. But the next step breaks the logic chain which is that those frustrated people decide to vote against the progressive policies and instead vote for the guy with the gold shitter.

See also: Brexit.

No. But the problem is the Dems are offering more of the same and the Republicans are offering simple solutions to people's problems led by a guy with a reputation as a "tough street brawler"

This sort of thing doesn't help either:

“I’m a Democrat, but I did not give my vote to Harris,” said Gus Tarraf, 51.

“Because my people are getting killed. I’m Lebanese…countries are being destroyed: Gaza, Lebanon. Why would I give my vote to her?”

No, they’ve bought into a narrative that says all their problems are caused by illegal immigrants and foreigners.

Yawn. Yes they're all racists. We get it. See my comment above though. Why are they racist or have sympathy with that narrative? Because the political system doesn't serve them. They see other people benefitting from either goverment largesse or economic growth while their own experience is higher prices, lower wages and ever increasing economic insecurity. People don't have room in their heads to worry about things like racism and other 'woke' issues when they can't afford to feed their families. That's why the Hispanic vote has flipped to Trump.

Anyway I'm out. I can see this thread/forum going down another sneering and patronising rabbit hole of 'look what the rednecks have done!' outrage. I bet everyone in Kamala Harris's campaign HQ is thinking the same right now. That's why they lost.
