The multiple kill vehicle program was quietly restarted in 2015 - insane piece of engineering that.
There’s a lot of weird and exotic defense stuff going on - hypersonic missiles, swarming missiles, lasers, fighter jets with vertical launch systems (BAE Tempest) so they can be packed full of small, cheap defensive missiles that can shoot down bigger missiles (the way to make expensive manned fighters relevant again, is to make them like a naval destroyer - enlarge the airframe as structural materials are cheap, pack them with as many cheapish missiles as possible so that you can defeat waves of drones and large expensive SAMs - (swinging the economics of large manned fighters back in their favour a bit).
Those are just the things we know about, those pilots probably stumbled on a skunkworks test - and then the incident can be used to keep people thinking about little green men instead of some very scary, brutal experimental weapons.

Hahah I was only being half serious - but does anyone really think the USAF/USN are going to come out debunk any UFO theories? They aren't - because it's an easy and pretty entertaining win to keep people guessing.
I seem to remember when the F-117's and B-2's were being tested in secrecy, UFO sightings shot up.
Also, fighter pilots play jokes - the same people who brought us "like uhhh....dude....we could like totally draw a giant penis in the sky" - it would not surprise me one bit to learn in 30 years this was one big practical joke that went way wayyyy to far.

The U.S. and China are in a new technological arms race to develop the next generations of aircraft and advanced weaponry. Part of this race includes producing disinformation and misinformation to make your enemy invest resources, both intelligence and research and development related, that are, for lack of a better word, dead-ends.
Being able to explain away strange objects in the sky as UFOs, which may indeed be emerging classified capabilities, is also beneficial both here at home and abroad. Overall, these patents certainly add to an increasingly complex narrative mosaic that is emanating directly from the Navy, one that began just as a new era of so-called 'great power competition' was being declared at the highest rungs of the Pentagon's leadership.
At the same time, maybe this is the Pentagon's grasping attempt to try to make sense of and emulate mysterious and seemingly highly advanced craft that are supposedly being increasingly observed near its own aircraft, vessels, and installations. Maybe the Chinese competition claim is just a placeholder for the unknown.
It's also at least worth considering that some breakthroughs in highly exotic propulsion might have been made and that the Navy is willing to invest big bucks into seeing them progress further. Maybe those advances happened many years ago and only now is the Pentagon willing to slowly disclose them. Or all this could be a case of wasteful, misguided, or even downright corrupt spending on ideas that have no real chance of paying off down the line.
The bottom line is that after months of investigation, reaching out directly to the Navy and all those involved, as well filing numerous FOIA requests that will take months or even years to process, there is still so much we don't know about the technological developments the Navy is pursuing or that it is at least acting like it's pursuing. The existence of these patents and the underlying documentation we've brought to light and examined has only made this case more puzzling, especially in contrast to experts we have talked to who claim there is no way these patents could describe actual working technologies.

My dad was involved in designing an early IC chip for Ferranti in the 70s, and I remember him showing off these weird new plastic wires where you shone a light down one end and it came out of the other, but not out of the side.

As for the “revelations” I suspect there is plenty more footage and tomes of reports on this very subject. However, blaming governments for cover ups is a little too unimaginative... yes they may have investigated sightings and documented them, however they can’t document all of them and therefore use their cloak of secrecy as a barrier to an open door policy... and hence the “government cover up” hypocrisy.

The governments have done more than just cover up investigations. Mostly they are not bothered by investigations these days as there's nothing for them to prove. The only relevant thing is air safety. There are groups in the US who document all of the sightings ( not for profit orgs). Some governments have real flying craft and alien bodies already. There were stories of pilots having been demoted once they have mentioned seeing craft and being to told not to report them. There are stories of whole towns seeing massive craft as well as the police etc only to be told by the government that that were helium ballons / flares etc. This type of behaviour is a constant and regular occurance.

I know it's hard to believe but this has happened many times in other parts of the world. The people who see things know what they saw and sometimes come forward for the investigations carried out by the good work of the not for profits. Some of the witnesses have been police etc. The press is often closed out too by the army and reporters are often scared to run articles or given false accounts by the military.
After important people retire they sometimes then reveal what part they played.
Except for the people who seen the crash of course.

it may be the same as a film. The accounts have been given by witnesses of many investigations. The main group in the US that investigate ( not for profit org ) have a number of warehouses all full of evidenced files. Often this knowledge is known by officals etc coming forwards. There are literally thousands of investigations carried out over many years.

don't be silly. the flatbed is all covered up. Most crashes occur miles from anywhere with the only witnesses being the local villagers. The army are then there very quickly as they watch them drop off of the radar. Some craft are too big for flatbeds and just get sealed off.

Reminds me of a Stargazers Lounge thread where somebody said they’d seen a UFO. He described the direction, constellations it passed etc, and said it was so bright and quick it couldn’t possibly be anything other than aliens.
The first replies, posted very quickly, advised him that it had been the ISS. A quick web search would have told him that, also who was on board, what they were doing, what they had for tea... I’m guessing he really wanted to see aliens. 😁

I think this is almost a certainty. It's a numbers game.
Many factors have to be Just Right for life to exist. It's a vastly unlikely thing to happen.
But. The universe is a big place and we are exceptionally bad at comprehending really big things.
Our own galaxy has something like 200 billion stars in it, and we're a relatively small one (our closest spiral galaxy Andromeda has about a trillion). There's estimates of between 170bn and two trillion galaxies in the observable universe.
Using conservative figures that gives us 40,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars and the actual figure is probably considerably higher (I've just googled and found an estimate from 2003 putting it at near double my figure, 70 and all those zeroes, so I was quite pleased with my back-of-an-envelope workings here when I saw that). By way of comparison that's ten times the number of grains of sand on Earth (and ten times the number of molecules in a drop of water, seems we're very bad at comprehending really small things too, who knew).
So if we were to say that life on a planet is a once-in-a-trillion occurrence (a figure I've just pulled out of my arse as an example), that means there's 70 million stars out there with life in their solar system. We've gone from life on other planets being highly unlikely to the notion instead that it's highly unlikely that there isn't life elsewhere.
Of course, the kicker is that distance is another very big and difficult to comprehend number. Is there life on other planets, almost certainly. Will we ever see for ourselves, almost certainly not. Are there little green men in flying saucers, stop reading conspiracy theory websites Mulder.

I can see three explanations here:
1) "Stories" and anecdotes are not evidence. I've read a story about a boy who was bitten by a radioactive spider and ended up with the ability to climb walls and shoot webs out of his wrists (which is clearly nonsense, he should've shot them out of his arse).
2) Secret new spy planes need to have test flights at some point and their governments probably don't want details of such things reaching foreign shores.
3) It's aliens.
(Call me sceptical, but I don't expect that all three explanations carry a similar probability.)

Myself I believe in the "zoo hypothesis" which is that there are lots of alien species out there but they are keeping us in isolation until we grow up a bit.

In one example some of the ancient language was deciphered talked about ufos and aliens helping them. The flying craft usually had flames coming from them and some looked just like traditional planes with wings, a body and jets. others looked like typical flying disks with lights around them.
