I'm about to embark on 7 hour car journey, kids will be glued to screens so I need decent listening. I'm sorted for tunes, need some words.

I like current affairs, humour, TED type talks, bit of history, outdoorsy stuff.

Ideally available on BBC or Spotify for ease of download.

Whats keeping you interested just now?

Ta

The 'That Peter Crouch' podcast series has been very entertaining but best not played in front of the kids as some of the language is a bit spicy. You don't have to be a football fan to apreciate it though.

It doesn't tick any of your interest boxes so may be a bit of a leftfield suggestion, but I'm loving Escape This Podcast at the moment.  Usually two hosts and a couple of guests, the guests have to solve escape room type scenarios narrated by the hosts.

In their element on BBC iplayers has been good.

There's also a few episodes of Curse of the Woosters staring the late great Sir Michael Horden and Peter Briers.

Of course since the dickheads at BBC have launched BBC Sounds, good luck with finding it on the website. Youll need to use the old iplayer radio app if you dont want to tear your hair out.

I've been finding "my Dad wrote a porno" quite funny.

Most of the above are regulars for me - Desert Island Discs is good

If you like Bob Mortimer then Athletico Mince, the non-football football podcast. Although definitely not one for kids.

Current favourite is a compilation of his Scottish 'songs', including the delights of Timpson's heel bar and a seat in Costa Coffee on the mainland.

Ashamed no ones mentioned the bugle yet

Older eps http://www.gamesplusone.com/thebugle/ - 160 onwards was during the hacking scandal as it was published on the Times online.

The current stuff from thebugle is on Spotify

+1 Danny Baker show, the most-recent was fantastic for the Viv Fisher story alone.

Also +1 Freakonomics - always engaging and interesting, very well produced.

Just started with Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History, highly recommend that too. Will make you feel smarter.

+1 for Distraction Pieces. I've not listened to loads (because I don't really listen to podcasts) but am a Pip fan so do like a listen.

I'll have a look through others suggestions too 🙂

usually listening to back episodes of Marc Maron, Buckles or Mince.

Crouchy is great

RHLSTP was a firm favourite till i saw it live in Manchester and decided i hate his audience for obediently belly laughing at the boring unfunny no-mark guests he had on.

Downtime is decent but as most mtb podcasts they're scraping the barrel for guests nowadays.

Wittertainment would be ok if they stopped reading out unbearable listener correspondence.

Jon Ronson's Butterfly Effect was a 7 parter. brilliant listen!

Richard Herring is funny if he doesn't talk. That emergency question thing makes me cringe.

Let your guest do the talking.

the 50 things that made the modern economy is very good - they're all really interesting even if the subject doesn't seem so when you first look at it.

The one on concrete and the part about it changing the lives of lots of third world families has always stuck in my mind

To add to the above good recommendations. I've recently started to also listen to Daniel and Jorge explain the universe, finding it really interesting, found it after reading their book "We have no idea".

Will check out the Peter Crouch podcasts and thank you to whoever it was that mentioned the freakonomics podcasts about being an elite athlete, am now listening to some of the back catalog.
