Our front door is a UPVc job with a standard yale type lock.
I'm sure (though I may be wrong) that previously when you exited, closed the door behind you (and possibly lifted the stubby handle up, possibly not) it was locked and you couldn't re-enter without a key. I used to lock myself out whenever I took the bins out.
Now the only way to lock the door from the outside is to use the key. CLosing and even lifting the stubby handle up doesn't lock it.
Does this mean the lock is broken? Or maybe there is some adjustment I can make to get this function back?
Any ideas?
Mine works like that from the inside but not from the outside. So if i pull the handle up from the inside then it can't be opened from the outside. Turning the key just deadlocks it.
I recently had the same thing happen to me.
On my UPVC front door there is a small metal retention plate which stops the door being opened from outside without a key.
Part of this had broken away on mine, so I replaced it.
Basically the plate is something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Avocet-Replacement-Centre-Latch-Keep-Striker-Plate-For-Upvc-Door-Lock-Keep-/281915390866
Assuming it is this, them remove the old plate (should be a couple of screws holding it in place) & measure it up to make sure you buy the right size
