A little icon has appeared in the status bar of my laptop, which is, apparently, 'Upgrade to Windows 10'. It's got Vista on it at the moment.
Should I? It's not the s****iest/newest of laptops...
I'd say almost certainly. However, I'm surprised it's being offered on Vista, I thought W7 and 8.1 were the only OSes which qualified for a free upgrade.
I thought 10 wasn't available until 29/7 too?
Maybe they've taken pity on Vista users 😉
Maybe it's not Vista (although I'm sure it is...) And maybe it won't be a free upgrade.
Hit Start, type winver and press Enter, should tell you what you have.
If it's got Vista on it anything will be an improvement. Amiga Workbench, anyone?
it doesn't actually upgrade you yet but it'll download the update when available
you can run a checker for your system to see if it's up to the job, I'm sure
Noooooooooooooo!
OK Yes, probably, but wait till it's been out in the wild six weeks. Is there something you've been itching to do on your 'puter that Vista won't let you? I'm told (on El Reg) that 10 takes updates out of your hands and does them when it wants, rather than asking nicely or waiting for a reboot.

As long as it doesn't do the stupid Vista/Win7 trick of automatically applying an update and then rebooting your PC while you are out at lunch! 👿
Yeah thanks Microsoft, don't worry I wasn't working on anything important.
I think it's said above but you are basically reserving it and it will be downloaded when MS decide to roll it out to you.
I think you can defer to apply the upgrade when the time comes.
So I've clicked on the icon and 'reserved' my upgrade.
My one reservation is I have Home Premium which when it gets upgraded to the Win 10 equivalent I lose control over the Windows Updates. These will be applied automatically which I am not so happy about.
The 'required spec' for Win 10 actually looks a bit less / better than Vista.
