We were gifted a Mac . It is set up on our friends ex husband’s account ,so no chance of getting the password.
We’ve set ourselves up as a different user.
Numbers needs updating which we can’t do without the Apple ID password.
Any cunning plans?

Can you set up an Apple ID and associate it with your user?

But it’s probably best to erase it and start again. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT212190

Would we need the password to erase?
I know my iPad asks for it.

You can reset the admin password https://www.hellotech.com/guide/for/how-to-reset-admin-password-on-mac

If it's been gifted and you don't care about anything that's already on it, the easiest thing is to just reinstall entirely. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204904

Sorry to hijack but related. What about an Ipad? My partner has this old ipad that's under an ex's name. It can't be used without the account holder password but he ain't saying nothing.
Can we completely reboot it somehow without a password?
I'm guessing not.

@Kayak23, unfortunately not, if an account has been registered on the device, it needs to be removed first. Even after it's reset, it will request still request the password for the associated account.
I have to confirm " It can’t be used without the account holder password" to login to it, or to install apps.. install apps/reset can be associated to an account registered on the device.

If there an initial password you can't get past, that might be cleared by resetting (see the post above), but that assumes no apple account has been registered on the device...
If you have the original receipt for the device, you could contact apple support, to see if they will remove the account, but it's not a straight forward request.

You should probably contact the person you are stealing the Mac from. 😆

Sorry again for the hijack but related, kind of...

Been offered a Macbook Pro, 2015 ish. It comes with a 500gb SSD. I'm on a W10 Laptop with a 1TB SSD. So is it easy or even possible to upgrade drives on these? Either by just shoving mine in, or a new SSD and then transferring my files.
