I rarely use the DSLR nowadays and find myself just using my phone for most photos. But, we have a few good trips away coming up and I have decided that I would like a better quality photo.

Requirements are:

Easy U.I with decent range of presets
Good enough zoom (not expecting miracles but would like a relatively good zoom
Able to withstand the oocassional knock or bumopQuality battery, preferably rechargable AA so I can drop spares in if needed.

Thats all so interested to hear views!

Ta

There aren't many left which take AAs. And unless techonlogy has moved on since I last looked at cameras I'd favour a spare proprietary battery over something that runs on AAs anyway, simply because of relative battery life. But if that's what you want, Googling "camera aa batteries" returns a number of lists and roundups.

Fair point about batteries. So dropping that requirement, what is good?

Get spare battery, not really necessary as the batt last ages.

and case with the spare cash you save.

Wife is on her third Canon Powershot SX (not that they're fragile, she's just [strike]careless[/strike]hard on them). Great zoom, lens big enough to get plenty of light in but it retracts all the way so pocketable, just not in the way an Ixus is. Plenty of manual control if you're inclined to use it. Very respectable video performance too.

SX270 is about £150 online, leaving plenty of change for a few spare batteries.

Else a Canon EOS M can be had for £199 with a kit lens now, and if you have a Canon SLR then you can reuse any lenses you have. But ultimately still not that portable once it has a lens on it.

Sony xerperia Z2 or Z3...

seriously good camera, esp for just taking holiday type snaps. my Z1 Compact does great burst shots. ideal for riding. the GF has the Z3. fantastic. 4k slo-mo vids. really high quality pics.

and you get a phone, too.

What alpin said. I bought a z1 as my pocketable 'camera' and it really is an amazing little thing.

Nice piece of kit, runs on AA's for ages.

http://slrhut.co.uk/search/?q=DMC-LX7 I've taken this cycle touring, had a fair few drops and crashes. Very good IQ, physical controls, like a DSLR.

I had a Canon SX230 but put a scratch on the lens. When I looked at the replacement model the SX250, the sensor had taken a MASSIVE downgrade and the pics on dpreview looked rubbish in comparison!

Aren't the pictures a function of the sensor, the lens and the processor?
