Probably a scam but I received an unsolicited Amazon package today. But it's actually useful, a pack of various grades of silicon carbide abrasive paper.

Reported to Amazon customer service and it seems like I can keep it.

Google "brushing scam."

In any case, yes, you're legally allowed to keep unsolicited goods.  It's to stop people sending you stuff with something like "you can either return this within 14 days or pay us £x..."  I remember my gran getting packs of Christmas cards like this when I was a kid, I think masquerading as some charity or other.

I think sometimes they just screw up. I received three rather fetching dog fetch balls along with something I had actually ordered. Brain did the whole, 'Omigod, does this mean the dog - which we didn't even own at the time - has hacked my amazon account and started ordering toys / will my account be drained by Venezuelan hackers etc'.

Compared the shipping labels on the two packages and they were identical. My conclusion was that either someone/something had accidentally printed and used two labels in error and some unfortunate dog owner had missed out on their balls, or more likely, our as yet unborn pup had somehow infiltrated amazon's system and started ordering stuff in advance.

Amazon said I could keep them anyway and now we have a dog, they will, at some point, have a purpose.
