Unlikely subjects for a musical

So, for reasons that I don’t fully understand, I’m going to see Bonnie & Clyde The Musical tonight.

Two murderous armed robbers who were (spoiler alert) shot 43 times between them in their final fateful encounter with the law, and were in such a mess that their bodies were towed to the morgue still in the car. Presumably because nobody wanted to open the doors and ruin their shoes.

Struggling to think of any uplifting song and dance numbers that can come from that.

So, what else would be an odd choice for a musical?

The Icelandic Cod War?

Brexit?

Chernobyl?

Mrs Beagleboy and I saw, Moby Dick the Musical at the Minack theatre in Cornwall about 14yrs ago. It was brilliant fun, way better than Bat Out Of Hell the musical that we saw in that there London place more recently.

Just sit back and let the absurdity wash over you.

Can't see a rap-based musical about the founding fathers of the USA doing much business.

An episode of Buffy the Vampire slayer that forces characters to reveal their true thoughts resulting in some huge pivots in their story arcs?

We've seen that twice. Once when it first came out and it was quite dark and dystopian, and once after Covid when it was like some sort of hen party sing-a-long.

Sweeney Todd?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweeney_Todd:_The_Demon_Barber_of_Fleet_Street_(2007_film)

I reckon it's only time until they make a musical about more recent serial killers.

Personally I'm looking forward to 'Truss!'

Hits to include songs such as "Pork Markets", "Maffs for Muggles" and "Kwasi's Krazy economic Nightmare"...

And of course "outliving a lettuce"

My wife loves to watch Glow Up, a bake off style make up prog on BBC3. This week the contestants had to make up the cast of a girl power style musical about Henry VIII's 6 wives that's currently running in the West End

Bonnie and Clyde is touring here shortly.

Other unlikely actual musicals include Rent, Kinky Boots,  and I really enjoyed Hadestown recently.

A few years ago I caught Made in Dagenham the Musical and loved it.

This would be amazing. Featuring love! Children! Sadness! Support! Sudocrem! Picolax! Someone needs to get to work on this right now.

My favourite is Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off, featuring such hits as
"I hate every chimp I see, from Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Zee", "Dr Zeus Dr Zeus", and numerous others

I remember there was a musical about Robert Maxwell but there may have been an injunction to stop it.

i clearly recall hearing some of it. The rendition of Night Swimming was quite touching

Important issues like the US/Canada war, the devil's alliance with his gay lover Saddam Hussein, and of course Kyle's mom being a bitch, made for one of the best musicals of the 90s.

  1. I thought it odd when the posters for the Operation Mincemeat show started appearing. How do you make a musical about that.

Time for the Andrew Lloyd Webber to update some of his musicals:

Cats & sudocreme

Smurfmat Driving God.

Update: It was actually pretty good. Gave more context than the film as to why they were murderous ass holes.

A WW2 mash up......

Digging out tunnels called Tom, Dick and Harry,

Getting shot in the back as I climb out the lorry,

Showing my papers and other such japes,

These are a few of my greatest escapes.
